  • This invention relates to door fastenings and to limited opening control means, and more especially to those. attachments which are commonly known as door guards. Such devices are intended for adjustment to secure a partly open hinged door against opening wide, but permitting it to stand ajar or somewhat open, suilicient to provide ventilation, and they are so designed and arranged as to be normally operable only from the inside.

This invention relates to door fastenings and to limited opening control means, and more especially to those. attachments which are commonly known as door guards. Such devices are intended for adjustment to secure a partly open hinged door against opening wide, but permitting it to stand ajar or somewhat open, suilicient to provide ventilation, and they are so designed and arranged as to be normally operable only from the inside. Heretofore such devices have usually consisted substantially of a pair of members in the form of plates or leaves hinged together, one being adapted for fastening permanently to the door casing, as by screws or the like,v either against the room side face of the casing where exposed to view, or in an appropriate notch in the-door edge opposing partof the casing, and the complementary member being arranged to swing horizontally and project more or less into the room for detachable engagement with a fastening permanently secured to the inner side of the door. Such devices, although they have been extensively used for many years, have certain serious shortcomings and are accordingly objectionable for the reason that in the former arrangement, still sometimes used, they are unsightly, and in the latter arrangement, though neat in appearance, they may be readily made ineffective and operated abnormally by a person on the outside, through the removal of the fasten ing screws from thecasing plate, which is exposed when the door is at all open.
The-main objects of the present invention are to provide *a door guard of improved form; to-provide both for concealment of the fixed inner member of the check on the door edge of the casing and for protection against tamperin therewith or removal thereof from the outsi e; to provide such a device adapted for ready door control engagement with the door whenthe latter is closed or nearly closed, and which is non-detachable therefrom when the door is swung inward somewhat; to provide a door guard of the .general'character described in which the swinging member is, foldable back away from the door and against the inner wall of the casing or of the room when not in use; and to provide such a guard in which the swinging member is also swingable against the inner face of the door and into engagement therewith when the latter is closed for locking V the same.

In the construction shown in the drawings, the door guard l is adapted and arranged to engage the T-catch 2 fastened to the inner side of the door 3 at its free edge. As viewed in Fig. 1, said door occupiesthe doorway 4: when closed and is hinged at 5 to the left upright 6 of the door casing. The right-hand upright 7 of the door casing is recessed at 8 to accommodate the free edgeof the door when closed and to provide a stop shoulder 9 for the door.
The door check 1 comprises a plurality of sections in the form of plates 10, 11 and 12 hinged together at 13 and 1.4: as shown by Fig. 5. The right-hand plate, as viewed in Fig. 5, is provided with holes 15 to receivethe screws 16 for securing the guard permanently.

dinal slidewayv or guide part. This is represented by, the long central slot 17 which is substantially enlarged at its inner end 18 adjacent to hinge 14: to accommodate co-action with the T-catch 2. This catch is provided with a horizontal ofiset arm 19, the extremity of which extends parallel with the door, and when the latter is closed overlaps somewhat the position of the door-guard as indicated in F ig. 2;. This arm part includes, a narrow n ck. tQ fit in, the sl 17, and a head 21 ad missible through plate 12 at the enlarged end 18, only or slot17, as accommodated when the door is closed. The body part of catch 2 is provided with holes 22 for fastenings 23.

The plate 26 has holes 29, and a slot 30 is provided in plate 27 Although this form of lgg'uard is in efiect similar to the device of ig. 5 and offers similar protection against tampering from the outside, still the latter is somewhat preferable by reason of the unobstrusive position of its catch plate 12- when not in use.
In applying the device of Fig. 5 to a door casing, the door should be swung wide open and then with the plate 10 in place in recess 24 and with the sections 11 and 12 disposed in, alignment at about aright angle thereto the screws maybe set in place. Thenthe seotions 11 and 12 are swung to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the door may be closed. Then in case it is desired to use the guard, the section 12 is swung forward from its position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig, 1, wherebythe head 2-1 of the T-catch passes through the aperture 18, and upon then swinging the door inward, as in opening, the neck part 20 ofthe catch slides outward in the slot 17' until it assumes a position such as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. In this position, the door is open sufiicientlyto permit ventilation and if desired the reception of articles such as mail, groceries, etc, but with sufficient limitation to prevent the admission of a person from the outside. Moreover, in this position the members 2 and 12 cannot be disengaged, and this is true forany appreciable degree of opening of,the door with the-guard. in use. As will be apparent from Figs. land-2, the fastening screws 16 for the anchorage plate 10 are protected from removal by the metal plate section 11 when the guard is set for service as in Fig. 1.

A door guard adapted for attachment to. the door facing edge of a. casingcomprising an anchorage plate, acatch=plate anda linkplate, the lattermost being hinged at its o.p-. posite edges to one end of the catch plate. and to the rear end of said anchorage plate re-. spectively, whereby the anchorage-plateis protected against outside tampering when the door is open with the guard in use, said catch plate being formed adjacent to its inner end for connection anddisconnection relative to the door, and' having a longitudinal guidee way to'accornmodate limited. swinging of the door.
