. IMPROVEMENT IN LABEL-S FOR PLUG-TOBACCO.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN E. LIGGETT and GEORGE S. MYERS, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented new and useful ImprovementsV in Plug-Tobacco, of which the 'followingvis a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to an improved article of manufactured tobacco 5 and consists in the subj ect hereinafter more fully described.

Figurel is a top view of a device embodying the elements ot' the invention. Fig. 2 is a central section of same.

A in the accompanying drawings is a plug of tobacco, upon which is secured the label or metallic tag B, formed in any desired shape, and ornamented in any desired manner by cutting designs or letters through it, so that the article below fills out the outlines of the designs or letters, and renders the same perfectly distinct.

In order to effect this object in the best manner, the label Iand letters should be so cut that the edges of the same are bent slightly downward, so that the pressure will force the edges into the tobacco.

The label or plate above mentionedis formed as shown at Fig. l, being a piece of malleable material, shaped as desired, and provided at the proper intervals with the dependent lugs a, which, when the label B is placed upon the tobacco, and subjected to pressure, are driven into the tobacco, thereby holding the label in place... The pressure, also, willxforce the tobacco up through the letter-spaces, and itsA upper surface, then expanding, overlaps the edges of the letter-spaces, thus preventing Vthe movement of either wrapper or label, thus effecting the'object of providing a means of marking tobacco, and at the same time of assisting in securing the wrapper in place.

We are awarethat plug-tobacco has been provided with metallic labels exhibiting the manufacturers name; but in that case `the label was placed under the ultimate wrapper, and also had raised letters, which showed through the same.

In the present invention, by means of the peculiar formation of the letter-spaces, when the tobacco is pressed, the label is forced into the tobacco, which lls the spaces so that the letters do not rise above the surface ofthe wrapper. A i

We lay no claim to a solid metallic label placed under the wrapper, as such device is Well known; but

What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A skeleton or open tobaccolabel,.adapted to attach the Wrapperand illerof a plug of tobacco, and to be held vin place by the tobacco filling its interstices, vwhen it is pressed into the plug, substantially as set forth.
