Description

(No ModeLJ I. H. LAPORGE & J. B. SMITH.
KEY RING TAG.
No. 311,331. Patented Jan. 27, 1885.. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIcE.
FREDERICK H. LAFORGE AND JOSEPH B. SMITH, OF WATERBURY, CONN.
KEY-RING TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,331, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed October 17, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREnERrcK H. LA.- roncn and J os. B. SMITH, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of (lonnectic'ut, have invented a new Improvement in Name-Tags for Key-Rings; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in con nection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon. to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a face view, the cover closed; Fig. 2, same view with the cover open, eX- posing the recess and card therein; Fig. 3, edge view, the cover closed; Fig. 4, longitudinal section, the cover closed.
This invention relates to an improvement in the article constructed to be attached to key-rings as a mark to indicate to whom the keys belong, and commonly termed nametag, and the invention consists in the construction of the tag, as more fully hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the plate, which is struck from sheet metel and of any desirable outline. At one end it is pierced with a hole, a, or provided with other suitable device by which it may be attached to the key-ring.
' Near one end the surface of the plate is raised to form overhanging shoulders I). This is preferably made near the end in which the hole a is made, and diagonally across the plate, as seen in Fig. 2, and the shoulder is best formed by making a short bend in the plate, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
Upon that surface of the plate from which the shoulder projects a recess, 01, is formed, less in extent than that portion of the surface of the plate, and so as to leave a margin surrounding the recess.
B is the cover, which in shape corresponds to'that partof the plate from the shoulder to the opposite end, and at the said opposite end it is hung to the plate by a pivot, 6, upon which the plate D may be turned from over the recess, as seen in Fig. 1, to the position seen in Fig. 2, or. return. The free end of (No model.)
the cover is beveledto correspond to the over hanging shoulder 12, and is correspondingly inclined so as to permit it to readily turn from the position in Fig. 1, or to be returned thereto. When closed, the recess in the plate is covered; but by turning the cover to one side, as seen in Fig. 2, the recess is exposed. Into this recess a piece of paper, card, or other suitable material may be introduced, having upon it the name of the owner, or some mark by which the owner will be identified, and, as seen in Fig. 2, this card may be readily removed and another substituted for it.
As an article thepurchaser receives the tag without the card, and may apply thereto a card having any mark he chooses, and when the cover is closed the card is fully protected. This construction enables the manufacturer to produce these tags by means of dies, com-' plete and ready for the purchaser, and as the mark is to be applied by the purchaser, the usual time and expense necessary for such marking are avoided.
We are aware that label-holders have been made consisting of a recessed plate to receive a label, and a cover arranged over that recess, and therefore do not broadly claim such a holder. Such holders, however, are in no way adapted to be used as a key-tag.
The essential feature of our invention is the peculiar construction of the tag, as particularly specified in the claim.
We claim The combination of the plate A, constructed for attachment to the key-ring, bent to form the diagonal transverse shoulder b upon ohe side, and with a recess on the same side as the shoulder, and extending from near the shoulder toward the opposite side, a cover corresponding in shape to the plate from the shouler over the recess, and pivoted to the plate at the side of the recess opposite the said shoulder, substantially as described.
