Description

G. S. MYERS. MARKING PLUG'TOBACGO. No. 189,951. Patented Apri124,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIoE GEORGE S.'MYERS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARKING PLUG-TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,951, dated April 24, 1877 application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. MYERS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful posed above the mark or design, and then pressed into the tobacco, carrying with it the design, which may readily be discerned through the plate.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a plug of chewingtobacco, which is pro vided with the plate B, of anydesired form, and composed of glass or other translucent or transparent material, whether chemical, animal, mineral, or vegetable. Below the. plate B is placed the label D, upon which any design, trade-mark, or other matter may be represented, and which is placed face upward, so as to be readily discernible through the plate B.
It is obvious that the label may be of any suitable material, though a flexible material is preferred.
The method of attaching the label is to place it upon the plug of tobacco, and then superposing upon it the transparent plate B. This done, the plug is subjected to pressure, which forces the plate and label into the tobacco, where the plate is firmly held, and, while protecting the label, yet permits it to be clearly seen.
It is obvious that the label may be attached by placing upon the tobacco a piece of tinfoil or analogous material, then superposing the label thereon, and over this placing the plate, then subjecting the Whole to pressure, which will crowd them into the tobacco, after which the edges of the foil which projected above the tobacco may be trimmed off; or, if the foil be of suitable dimensions, the last operation will not be requisite.
By this means the label is efiectually preserved from contact with the tobacco, and yet is clearly discernible through the plate.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The transparent plate B, in combination with the label D, both being impressed into a plug of tobacco, substantially as set forth.
2. The method of attaching trade-marks to plug-tobacco, consisting of superposing a transparent or translucent plate above the mark or design, and then pressing it into the tobacco, carrying with it the design, which may readily be discerned through the plate, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in methods of attaching labels to plug-tobacco, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of February,
GEORGE S. MYERS. Witnesses:
