CHARLES S. YVESTCOTT, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,3112, dated May 20, 1862.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES S. NVESTCOTT, of the city,.county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Preventing the Opening' of Envelopes, Letters, or Packages Without Detection; and I do declare that the following is a full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in placing upon an envelope or letter aletter inscription or device, (as shown at vA, Figures 1 `and 2 on the accompanying drawings, or in any other position desired to be secured from opening,) in an ink or paint so soluble in water that moisture cannot be applied to open the letter or envelope without destroying or defacing the letter, inscription, or device sol placed. I also place a letter, figure, inscription, or device in the same material upon a separate piece of paper or material to be used a seal, (as shown at B, Fig. 3 on the accompanying drawings,) upon a letter, envelope, or package to prevent the same from being openedv without detection.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
The formation of any letter, inscription, or device upon a letter, envelope, or material to be used as a seal in an ink or paint which will be destroyed or defaced by an attempt to open a letter, envelope, or package upon which the same placed.
