PATENTEDUG. 13

HOMER C. BUSBY, OF MBILE, ALABAMA.
RECEIPT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed J'uly 2, 1906. Serial NoI 324,448.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER G. BUsBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receipt-Markers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices by means of which receipts, receipt books and other` papers may be so marked that it will be impossible to duplicate them and thereby work fraud upon innocent parties, and it relates more particularly to a device of this character which is especially adapted for use by insurance companies in marking the premium receipt books, whereby dishonest agents will beprevented from substituting fictitious or duplicate books Without detection.
The object of the invention is to provide a receipt marking device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive, and at the same time absolutely safe.
The above and other objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.'-
Figure l is a perspective view of a premium receipt book of the form usually used by insurance companies, which shows my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the duplicate marker, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the markers open to show the number, signature or other secret mark upon the inner side of the same; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. l, showing the manner of sealing the leaves in the book.
Referring to the drawings, l denotes a premium receipt book of the form commonly used by insurance companies, and 2 denotes my improved marking device which is secured, preferably, upon the inner face of the front cover of the book. This device 2 is preferably, and as shown, in the form of a folder consisting of a piece of paper or the like, upon the inner side of which is placed a number, (as seen in Fig. 3), a signature or any other secret mark or sign. The :marking devices are preferably made in duplicate, by means of a sheet of carbon papers, and one is attached to the book and the other is retained by the person or firm issuing the book. The devices 2, after being suitably folded, may be marked upon their outer faces with any suitable information, such as shown in Figs.
l and 2, and the one to be secured to the book or receipt l is preferably fastened thereto by means of a fine wire or the like 5 which is passed through the book cover and the folded paper or device 2, so as to prevent the latter from being opened. The ends of the wire are then fastened together by a lead seal 6 of any form and construction, so that it will be impossible to remove the folder or device 2 without breaking or destroying the seal.
It will be seen that by providing each of the receipt books given to the agents with a marking device of this character, it will be impossible for the agents to substitute a duplicate or fictitious book for the original without detection. Instead of using the folder, as shown, the marking device' may be in the form of a slip of paper inserted in an envelop or it may be of any other suitable form and may be sealed or attached to the book in any suitable manner. If desired the leaves of the book may also be fastened or sealed in place to prevent the removal thereof and substitution of other leaves by unscrupulous agents, said leaves being fastened by means of the sealing thread or wire 5 and seal 6, which hold the marking device or folder' or by a separate sealing wire 7 and seal 8 passed through the cover or leaves of the book, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will vbe readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle er sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
As a new :i1-ticle of manufacture, a receipt book, :l folder on the inner face of one of the covers of the book and having a concealed character, two members, each havingr its ends passed through the cover of the book, :1nd a seal on the ends ot" each of said members, one of the members being passed through the leaves of the book and the other member being passed through said folder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
