The present invention relates to improve ments in tobacco users appliances and has reference more particularly to a device for quenching or extinguishing a lighted cigar or 6 cigarette in a simple and eflicient manner.

;-- One ofthe important objects of the present invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character that may be detachably associated either with'a match case or the closed end of a cigarette lighter, said device being ofsuch size as to occupy a very small amount of space when laced in the pocket of the user so that the evice is at all times at hand for use.

A further object is to provide a device of lid being provided for the open upper end of the well which lid can be readily and easily swung to an open position to'permit the insertion of the lighted end of a cigar or cigarette when it is desired to extinguish the 1 39 same.

A further object is to provide a device. oi the above mentioned character that is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with .the accompanying drawing. v

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular shaped water container, the outer end of which terminates in the conical portion 2, and a filling neck 3 is formed at the smaller endof the conical portion 2. A cap 4 is detachably secured on the filling neck 3 for normally closing the same.

A split attaching flange 5 extends from the closed inner end of the container ,1, and this split flange is adaptedto encircle one end of a match case or the closed end of a cigarette lighter, as suggested in Figure 1. A clamping band such as is shown at 6 extends around the split flange for clamping the same on the end of the match case or cigar lighter to prevent the accidental disengagement of the container from the article on which it is secured.

The top of the container 1 is formed with an opening through which extends the conical well 7, the lower end thereof being open and terminating at the intermediate portion of the container. The upper edge of the well isfianged for disposition on the top of the container around the opening formed therein,

and any appropriate means may be provided for fixedly securing the well position in the water container.

A sponge. 8 is placed in the lower end ofthe [Well and the water is normally prevented from contact with the sponge through the medium of the cup-shaped member 9 that encircles the lower end of the well and a rubber disc 10 is arranged in the bottom of the cup shaped member to engage with the lower edge of the well 7.

An expansible coil spring 11 is arranged with the water container 1 for disposition between the bottom of the container and the cup shaped member 9 for normally urging .the same upwardly to maintain the rubber lighted end of the cigar or cigarette, and thispressure will result in the cup-shaped member 9 being forced downwardly against the tension of the coil spring 11 so that the rubber disc 10' is moved away from the lower edge of the well 7 and water is permitted to saturate the sponge and the dampened sponge will extinguish or quench the lighted end of the cigar or cigarette in a positive and efficient manner. As soon as thecigarette or cigar'is removed from the well the spring 11 automatically returns the cup shaped member ,9 and the rubber disc 10 arranged in the bottom thereof into its normal position, closing the open lower end of the well and preventing water from coming in contact with the sponge. a v

It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a device of the above mentioned character that can be gcarned aroundon the person and will not oc- Vcupy 7 any considerable amount of space.

In a cigar or cigarette extinguisher'of the class described, a water'receptacle provided with a filling opening, a closure therefor, the top of the receptacle being formed with an opening, the lower-end thereof being spaced from the bottom of the water receptacle, an absorbent 'member being arranged in the well, a spring pressed closure for the open lower end of the well to normally prevent water inthe container from reaching the absorbent member, said spring pressed closurebeing moved to an operative position to permit the absorbent member to become saturated whena downward pressure is exerted on the absorbent member byfthe cigar or cigarette to be extinguished,alid providing a closure for the upper open end of the Well, means at one end of the container for attaching the same to a support, said means comprising a split flange for encircling the support and a clamping band extending around the flange.
