3 Claims.
This invention relates generally to a cigarette extinguisher and retrieving device, but more specifically to a device to preserve partially spent cigarettes for subsequent or consecutive use.
The main object of the invention resides in a holder for extinguishing the lighted end of a cigarette and for reserving same for subsequent use so that a partially used cigarette can be relighted and smoked.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a cigarette holder having means for extinguishing the lighted end of the cigarette without destroying the form thereof and having means spaced therefrom for receiving the charred portion and the cigarette ash following extinguishment.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a cigarette extinguisher and case therefor wherein means are provided for preventing the tar and other products of combustion deposited within the case upon extinguishment of the cigarette from permeating the unused part of the cigarette when the case is closed.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a combination cigarette extinguisher or holder and case which is light in weight, easy to manufacture and use and also economical to manufacture.
These objects and other incidental ends of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosure and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Accompanying this specification is a drawing showing a preferred form of the invention wherein:
Figure 1 is a foreshortened view in elevation of the cigarette extinguisher and retrieving device in ClOScCi posi'tlon and enclosing a partially used cigarette.
Figure 2 is an axial sectional view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of Figure 2 along the plane 33 thereof.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of Figure 4 along the plane 4-4 thereof.
In accordance w1th the invention and the preferred form shown, the device comprises a tubular member ID having at one open end an internally threaded portion H and at the opposite open end having a flared edge I2 for facilitating the entrance of the lighted end of a cigarette l3 therein. A socket I4 is adapted to tnreadedly engage end portion ll of tubular member ID at an externally threaded and reduced neck portion IS. The edge of reduced neck portion l5 adjacent the upper end of the external thread is adapted to receive a grated and removable disc I6 such as a wire mesh which permits penetration of ash and other products of combustion thereinto for deposit at the base of socket l4 and as indicated by numeral 11. For this purpose disc 86 is forced through tubular member i0 after socket I4 is in engagement with portion H.
It is to be noted especially by reference to Figure 2 that the lighted end of cigarette [3 as indicated by numeral I8 is adapted to be rotated in frictional engagement against disk l6 for purposes of extinguishing the cigarette and for freeing the solid products of combustion thereof.
Sufficient clearance is provided between the sides of cigarette l3 and the inner walls of tubular member [0 for escape of the gaseous products of combustion. A cap member i9 is applied to tubular member It to enclose the device by engagement of the side Walls 20 thereof with the peripheral edge 2| of the flared portion [2. Cap l9 as shown engages the edge 2| in a peripheral groove 22, and for this purpose the side walls 20 are somewhat resilient for application to and removal from edge 2|.
The socket i4 is removable for cleaning purposes. Cap l9 which may or may not be used aids in the extinguishing of the lighted end [8 of the cigarette by cutting off the supply of air from tubular member 10 when the cigarette is extinguished frictionally. For frictional extingulshment of cigarette l3 at the lighted end 18, slight. downward pressure may be applied during rotation to avoid crushing and spreading of the cigarette tobacco adjacent the lighted end. The solid products of combustion fall through the disk l6 and thus are not in contact with the extinguished cigarette so that upon reuse of the partially spent cigarette there is absent the character1st1c stale taste and odor.
The device is normally in upright position with socket M at the bottom so that ash I'I within socket l4 does not contaminate end l8 of the cigarette through disc I6 when the device is carried about.
The device may be made of any material such as plastic, wood or metal and it is understood that minor changes and variations in the material, location, integration and size of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A portable cigarette extinguisher and retrieving device consisting of a tubular member open at both ends, a receptacle of the same external diameter as said tubular member removably engageable with one of said ends, a screen forming the top wall of the receptacle, the other of said ends having a flared peripheral lip and a cover member engageable with said lip.
2. A portable cigarette extinguisher and retrieving device consisting of a tubular member open at both ends, a receptacle of the same diameter as said tubular member removably engageable with one of said ends, and a removable screen forming the top wall of the receptacle and frictionally held by the tubular member adjaeent the base of the tubular member to serve as a rubbing surface and as a grating" for the lighted end of the cigarette.
3. A portable cigarette extinguisher and a retrieving device consisting of a tubular" member open at both ends, a receptacle of the same diameter as said tubular member removably engageable with one of said ends, a removable screen 20 4 bing surface and as a grating for the lighted end of the cigarette, the other of said tubular ends having a flared peripheral lip and a cover member engageable with said lip.
