Description

SAFETY CIGARETTE HOLDER MADE FROM PERFORATED PAPER AND METAL FOIL Filed Jan. 7, 1958 INVENTOR. Z! c/flJAPfz 22 3.45
. study of the following specification, taken United States Patent SAFETY CIGARETTE HOLDER MADE FROM PERFORATED PAPER AND METAL FOIL Joseph Tabara, Spring Valley, N.Y. Application January 7, 1958, Serial No. 707,503 2 Claims. (Cl. 131-174) This invention relates to smoking apparatus and more particularly to a holder for cigarettes.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination cigarette holder, ash tray, and automatic extinguisher for cigarettes which provides an added convenience for smokers, increases the safety of smoking cigarettes, and which prevents the cigarette from setting fire to anything with which it may come into contact.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a holder for cigarettes that substantially completely encloses a cigarette therewithin during use so as to prevent the cigarette from contacting anything that it might otherwise damage, and which includes means for automatically extinguishing the cigarette as the cigarette is completely consumed.
Still a further object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette holder and ash tray of the type described that is extremely simple in construction, efficient in operation, and which can be manufactured in large quantities at relatively low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device made in accordance with the present invention in an inoperative position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the parts being moved toward a closed operative position;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the device assembled for use;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 3, showing the cigarette in a completely closed and operative position in the holder;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away, of the holder with a completely consumed cigarette; and
Figure 6 is'a perspective of a stack of cigarette holders arranged in an inoperative position in nested relationship with each other.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2 thereof, a combination cigarette holder, ash tray, and extinguisher 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include two substantially identical main portions 12a, 12b integrally secured together along a central fold line 15. Each such portion includes a substantially flat annular frame 14 and a central hollow spheroid portion 17 that includes a plurality of minute perforations 18 for permitting the passage of air therethrough.
Each such portion 12a, 12b also includes a fold tab 19 at one side of the longitudinal axis thereof which is adapted to be folded over the opposite side of the other i such portion when the parts are moved to the operative closed position. A liner 21 of metallic foil or other non- ;metallic fire resisting material encompasses the interior 2,932,301 Patented Apr. 12, 1960 tremity thereof for preventing fire damage in a manner hereinafter described. A layer of any suitable adhesive material 20 is applied to at least one of the frames 14, to both of the fold tabs 19 and to each of the outwardly extending tab extensions 22 that are adapted to engage the month end of the cigarette 24 when inserted within the holder.
In actual use, these holders 10 may be provided in nested stacks 30, as shown in Figure 6, in which position they occupy a minimum amount of space. In order to use the holder, it is only necessary to fold it about its central fold line 15 and secure the adjacent frame portions 14 together with the self-contained adhesive coating 22 thereon. The fold tabs 19 are then folded into engagement with the opposite portions and by exerting a slight squeezing action along the sides of the unit, the tab extensions 22 may be spread apart sufliiciently to enable the user to insert the cigarette 24, in the manner shown in Figures 3 and 4. After the cigarette has been ignited, it is placed into the holder in the manner shown and the tab extensions 22 pressed into engagement with the month end of the cigarette to secure the parts in assembly with each other. It will thus be recognized that the perforations 18 enable a sufiicient amount of air to enter the holder to support combustion, while preventing strong winds from distributing sparks and ashes. All of the ashes 25 remain within the holder and, as the cigarette is consumed adjacent to the neck formed by the tab extensions 22, the metal foil or other fire resistant liner 21 smothers the cigarette and automatically prevents the burning of any material which it contacts.
Instead of round holes 18, the unit may be perforated by using oblong cuts and, since the particular paper may affect the taste of the cigarette being smoked, the holders can be toasted during the manufacturing process in order to eliminate any bad or unpleasant taste. It will be noted in Figure l of the drawing that the liner 21 extends about one-quarter of an inch into the neck of the holder formed by the tab extensions 22 to contact the cigarette and to form a ring around it so as to effect the aforementioned smothering of the cigarette without permitting the combustible parts of the liner from being overheated. Once the ignited end of the cigarette reaches that ring, it automatically is extinguished even when exposed to winds up to forty miles per hour. As a-result, the unit can be dropped anywhere without the danger of the cigarette igniting anything unless the holder is crushed or opened.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A safety cigarette holder comprising, in combination, a pair of substantially identical perforated side portions hingedly connected together along a longitudinal fold line for rotational movement from an open inoperative position to a closed operative position, means for securing said side portions in said closed position to define a cylindrical interior compartment, an access opening at one end of said compartment for receiving the ignited end of a cigarette therethrough, each said side portion comprising a substantially hollow hemi-cylindrical portion, and a substantially flat marginal rim extending around the periphery of said central portion, a longitudinally outwardly extending tab at an adjacent end of each of said side portions defining a sleeve when said side portions are in said closed position for engaging 3 the month end of the cigarette received within said access opening, and said securing means comprising an adhesive layer on the rim of at least one of said side portions.
2. A safety cigarette holder asset forth in claim -1, further comprising a fire resistant liner within each one of said side portions adjacent to the respective access opening ends thereof.
