Application October' 29, 1938, Serial No. 237,'73l
` 1 claim. `(cl. 181-175) in appearance and which maybe manufactured at low cost. o i
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like charactersof reference designate corresponding parts throughontithe'rseveral views, and wherein: o
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cigarette holder constructed iniaccordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan View, showing the device o open with a cigarette therein. o
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectionalview through the inner end portion of the device. w
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it Will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a bit' or mouthpiece I of suitable material. The mouthpiece l through a smoke passage 2; Projecting longitudinally from the forward endlof the month-piece I is an integral nipple 3 the inner portion of which is externally threaded. Extending into the nipple 3 is a socket 4 for the reception of a cigarette, as at 5 (see Fig. 2). i The socket`4, of course, communicates with the smoke passage 2.
Mounted on the mouthpiece i is a guard which w is designated generally by the reference numeral 6. The guard includes elongated complemental half sections 1 and 8 which are hingedly connected on one side, as at `9. The half sections I and 8 of the guard 6 are provided with fireproof linings IO of suitable material, such as asbestos. As shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the guard sections 'l and 8 are perforated, as at Il, for the entrance of air. i i
Fixed in the inner end portion of the guard section 1, which is stationary, is an internally has cxtending longitudinally there-` threaded ring |2 (see Fig. 5) whichis threaded on the nipple 3. 'I'hus, the guard 6 is mounted on the mouthpiece I At its outer end the guard 6 is closed, this end of said guard being rounded in the manner shown to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Projecting from the hingedly. connected sides of the guard sections 1 and 8 isa pair of diverging handles or levers l3 of substantially the shape shown to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The outer end portions of the levers |3 have formed therein and extending thereacross slight o grooves or channels |4. Mounted between the levers |3 is a spring 15 for closing the guard 6. As best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the end portions of the spring 15 are engaged in the grooves or channels M forlsecuringsaid spring in posi-- tion between the levers I 3.1;
It is thought vthat the manner in which th device is used Will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. For the insertion of a cigarette, or the removal of a cigarette stub, the guard may be conveniently opened by pressing the levers I 3 together against the tension of the spring |5. Of course, as soon as the levers {3 are released the spring 5 functions to close the guard 6. Ashes and'sparks dropping from the burning cigarette are caught and retained infthe asbestos lined guard 6. The guard 6 also per-l inits the device to be placed in a pocket with safety with a burning cigarette therein. It may be well to here state that the device may be readilyimade to accommodate cigars as well as cig-.
arettes. i
It is believed that the many advantages of a oigarette holder` constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and varrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A cigarette holder of the class described comprising a mouthpiece having a smoke passage therein, an ntegral extcrnally threaded nipple projecting longitudinally from the forward end 'of said mouthpiece, said nipple having a socket ed guard including two half sections, the inner' ends of which are straight and the outer ends of which are rounded; the straight inner end of one section being fastened to one-half of the exportions of the two Sections adjacent side edge terior fcircumference of the ring, hinge means for portions thereof, and spring means extending connecting a side edge of the movable half secbetween the handles for holding the movable section to the stationary half section, perforated tion against the stationary section, the linings linings in the two Sections of fireproof material, having perforations therein regstering with the 5 the inner end of each lining terminating at the perforations in the Sections.
front face of the ring, handles connected to side WALTER W. BRADY.
