CIGAR HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMILIO V. LOMBARDO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at .Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character constructed to operate as a combined ash holder and spark arrester.

Another object is to provide a holder of this character which while affording ample draft to ensure burning of the cigar or cigarette and will so protect it as to prevent all danger of fire incident to escaping sparks. It also operates to protect the smokers cliilthing and surrounding objects from the as es.

With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated the holder 1 constitutin this invention comprises two sections 2 an 3 arcuate in cross section connected by a rectilinear section 4 the side edges of said section 4 being hinged tothe side ed% s of the sections 2 and 3 as shown at5 in Each section 2 and 3 is provided with a plurality of series of apertures 6 extending substantially throughout the length thereof and the free edges of said sections are notched as shown at 6 the notches registering when the sections are closed to form one side edge thereof draft openings. These sections 2 and 3 are also provided on their inner faces with combined connectors and spacing elements 7 which unite these sections with sections 11 and 12 forming an inner casing 10. This inner casing also has apertures 13 adjacent which are designed to register with the apertures 6 in the outer casing the remainder of said sections 11 and 12 being imperforate to prevent the escape of ashes dropped from the cigar. Arranged between the inner edges of the sections 11 and 12 of the inner casing 10 is a straight member 15 which lies parallel with the member 4 of the outer casing and is spaced therefrom and connected therewith by lugs 16. The inner faces of the sections 11, 12 and 15 are provided with laterally extending lugs 14 which operate to space the cigar shown at C from the inner member or the casing.

The outer casing is provided at the free edges of its sections 2 and 3 with cooperating catch members indicated at 17 for connecting the casing in closed position as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.

A mouthpiece 18 is mounted in one end of the casing as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 having an annular recess 19 in its outer face at its inner end to receive the outer casing as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.

A cap 20 is mounted at the other end of the casing being hingedly connected thereto as shown at 21 and is composed of inner and outer members 22 and 23, respectively, having registering draft openings 24 and 24 therein, the openings 24: being larger than those 24 and arranged directly on top of the cap. This cap is held in closed position by a catch 25 which may be of any suitable or desired construction.

In the use of this device to insert a cigar or cigarette the casing may be opened into the position shown in Fig. 3 and after placing the cigar or cigarette C therein the- side members 2 and 3 are brought together and secured by the catch 17. The cap 20 is then closed and the mouthpiece 18 inserted and the device is ready for use. It will thus be seen that the cigar will be completely housed within the holder and yet ample draft afi'orded for the proper smoking thereof and that any ashes WhlCl'l may drop therefrom will be caught and held and sparks will be prevented from passing out of the holder. This device not only protects other persons from the sparks of the cigar and the ashes but renders it safe for smokers who smoke in bed.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

,What I claim is:

A device of the class described comprising two double walled sections arcuate in cross section with a double walled rectilinear section disposed between them, and having the side edges of the outer wall of said section hinged to those of the outer wall of the arcuate sections, each arcuate section being provided with a plurality of series of apertures, the inner wall of the rectilinear section being imperforate and the outer wall carried by the inner faces of the inner walls.
