BUTT EXTINGUISHER AND TRAY Filed Nov. 21, 1927 TTORNEY Patented July 24, 1928.
.m uoauonn edrevenue;- 21, 132? Serial mama,
class of people-igto-theunprotected country and mountain districts.where,-:because of the amount of inflammable grass, and brush,
many fires are caused by off-cast burning cigars, cigarettes and matches.
This condition has resulted in the enforcement of no smoln'ng restrictions in the hazardous countr and in laws against cast- 13 in of burning cigars, etc. along highways.
his presents a need for a simple, practicable and low cost and safe means for receivin these smokers stubs and matches and as es.
20 Therefore an object of this invention is to provide a device which may be readily at-' tached to a convenient part of an automobile and serve to hold lighted cigars and, cigarettes; to extinguish them, and to receive and contain the waste butts and match stems until they may be safely discarded.
The device is not confined to use only as autoists equipment but may be arranged on any convenient support in the home, oiiice, club or other place frequented by smokers.
There are other objects, advantages and features of construction as wi1l'be made manifest in the followin description of the herewith illustrative em odimen't; it b ng understood that modifications and adapt.- tions may be resorted to within the spirit, scope and principle of the invention as it is more directly hereinafter claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of" the device as device showing a cigarette disposed in fire extinguishing position.
Figure 3 is a cross-section"; the barrel in inverted dumping position over the tray drawer.
Figure 4 is a cross-section showing the applied to a wind shield, by a suction cup. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the fir The drawer? has a cross partitionfi form'iiig an ash fpit-in the outer end and in a s'i t1on remote from the opposite end 0 the box and at which is a matclr'p'ocket 6.
The box 2 is substantially closed at its l I upper'part by-a top 7 which has 'alongitu mal, cylindrlcal rid e 8 provided'with 122101 p mouth .9 11 a thro'at'lO directly nowa v;
:jSnugly and fitting- -inthe ridge cylinder .8 is a barrel 11 havmgialong one side an orifice 12 to re ister with the mouth 8 and when the barrel 1s reversed the orifice registers with. the throat 9 and will discharge 1ts contents into the subjacent drawer 3. For the purpose of extinguishing the fire of clgars and cigarettes before they are laid 1n the open barrel there is provided in one end of the barrel a sliding pincer in the form of a. plunger 15 having a stem 16 sliding and rotative in an end bearing 17 on the end of theshell cylinder 8. The pincer 15 is not turn'able in thebarrel and it is pressed outward by a spring 18 enclosed in a thimble 19 on the stem 16. The inner end, of the pincer is recessed and when pressed on the thimble 19 will crush the urning end of a cigarette 0 against an abutment 2O fixed in the barrel. Ashes from the quenched fire will pass through a hole 21 in the bottom of the: barrel and fall into the ash pit in the drawer. Continued inward movement of the pincer will topple the cigarette over into the barrel 11.
A funnel wall 22 forms a guide to place the cigarette in register with the pincer 15 and the abutment 20.
The open pincer and the wall will form a holder for a cigarette disposedtherein'to be removed at will without pinching out the When the barrel is to be emptied this is accomplished simply by turning the thimble and its attached pincer 15, which results in rotating the receiving barrel 9. half turn to emptying position.
The box may be provided with a suction cup 25at the back so that it can be adhered to glass or on any smooth surface or it may have a. wedge part 26 for application-to a socket piece 27 which may be secured to any desired part, as the frame in the tonneau of an automobile.
It is understood that various advertisin matter may be applied to one or more the different pane s of the device.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety smokers ash and butt tray including a box having a drawer removable from the box, a cylinder forming the box top and having a top mouth and a throat leading into the box, and a barrel turnably fitting in the cylinder and having an orifice along one side to register with the mouth for admission of stubs into the barrel interior; said barrel in reversed position closely closing the said mouth and a sliding butt pincer in the barrel.
2. A safety ash and butt tray including a box, a drawer in the box, having an ash pit and a separate butt chamber, a rotary barrel closing the to of the chamber and having a receiving ori ce along thetop and an outlet into said pitat the bottom, and means for quenching butt fire and toppling the butt into the barrel. a
3. A safety ash and butt tray including a box, a drawer therein, a barrel closing the top of the box and having a receiving slot along its top, and means in the barrel for quenching the fire of an inserted butt and toppling the butt into the barrel said means operative to rotate the barrel 'to discharge its contents into the drawer.
4. A safety ash and butt tray including a box, a drawer therein, a barrel closing the top of the box and having a receiving slot along "its top, and means in the barrel for quenching fire of an inserted butt'and toppling the butt into the barrel said means op- I erative to rotate the barrel to discharge its contents into thedrawer; said drawer having an ash pit below said quenching means.
