Description

Aug. 23, 1955 w. R. FIELD 2,715,961
SAFETY EXTINGUISHER Filed June 2, 1952 Fig.
William R. Field INVENTOR.
United States Patent SAFETY EXTINGUISHER William R. Field, Memphis, Tenn.
Application June 2, 1952, Serial No. 291,178
1 Claim. (Cl. 206-38) This invention relates in general to extinguisher devices, and more specifically to a safety extinguisher for tobacco products.
At the present time numerous fires, such as forest fires, bed fires, etc., are being set by careless disposal of matches and ignited tobacco products. The careless disposal of the matches and tobacco products results primarily because of the absence of a suitable extinguisher for the matches and tobacco products whereby they may be conveniently and safely disposed of. It is, therefore, desirable to provide a convenient and safe extinguisher for matches and tobacco products which may be conveniently carried upon a person.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved safety extinguisher for tobacco products and matches, said safety extinguisher being in the general form of a fountain pen whereby it may be conveniently carried upon a person in the same manner as a conventional fountain pen.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved smokers accessory which will serve as an ashtray and at the same time may be utilized as a fire extinguisher for tobacco products and cigarettes.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved safety extinguisher for tobacco products, said safety extinguisher being adapted to receive a lighted cigarette, cigar or the like and extinguish the flame of the same, the extinguished tobacco product being suitable for smoking at a future time.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved smokers accessory which may be utilized in the extinguishing of ignited tobacco products, said smokers accessory including a special container for extinguishing matches, the container being removable from the other portions of the extinguisher whereby the other portions of the extinguisher may be utilized separately or in combination with the match container as desired.
With these objects definitely in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combi nation and arrangement of elements and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the safety extinguisher which is the subject of this invention and shows the general construction thereof;
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the safety extinguisher of Figure 1 showing the general outlines of the various elements forming the safety extinguisher of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 33 of Figure 4 and shows the details of the connections between the various elements of the safety extinguisher; and
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 4-4 of Figure 3 and shows the general arrangement of the elements of the safety extinguisher.
Similar characters of reference designate similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the different views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the safety extinguisher, which is the subject of this invention, includes an elongated tobacco product receiving member 10 which is provided with a rounded closed end 12. The tobacco product receiving member 10 is circular in cross-section and has a flared open end 14 providing an entrance thereto. In order that tobacco products may be conveniently contained within the tobacco product receiving member 10, the flared open end 14 thereof is closed by a removable cup-shaped cap 16.
In order that the safety extinguisher may also be utilized for the extinguishing and destroying of burned matches, the tobacco product receiving member 10 has secured thereto in telescoping relation to the closed end 12 thereof a tubular match receiving member 18. The match receiving member 18 has an open end 20 receiving the closed end 12 of the tobacco product receiving member 10, and a closed end 22 at the other end thereof. In order that matches may be conveniently placed into the match receiving member 18, the side wall thereof is provided with a match receiving opening 24 adjacent the open end 20. It will be understood that matches are inserted through the opening 24, preferably after their flame has been extinguished, and are stored within the match receiving member 18. If a match placed within the match receiving member 18 should be ignited at its time of entry, the lack of oxygen within the match receiving member 18 will result in the immediate extinguishing of the flame.
It is intended that the tobacco product receiving member 10 may be utilized without the match receiving member 18 and, therefore, the closed end thereof is rounded to afford a pleasing appearance. The open end 20 of the match receiving member 18 is tapered so as to conform to the configuration of the rounded closed end 12 of the tobacco product receiving member 10 and the telescoping relationship between the closed end 12 and the opening 20 is limited by engagement of the end of the match receiving member 18 with an annular shoulder 26 on the tobacco product receiving member 10 adjacent its closed end 12.
It is intended that the size of the combined tobacco product receiving member and the match receiving member be equal to that of a conventional fountain pen whereby it may be easily carried either in a persons pocket or in a pocketbook. In order that the safety extinguisher may not be easily lost, it is provided with a pocket engaging clip 28 of the conventional type.
The tobacco product receiving member 10 is intended to have a dual purpose in that it is designed for use as both an ash receiver and a tobacco product extinguisher. The open end 14 of the tobacco product receiving member 10 is flared so as to facilitate the removal of ashes from a cigarette or cigar and the disposal thereof within the tobacco product receiving member 10. When it is desired to extinguish a cigarette or cigar, the same is inserted within the tobacco product receiving member 10 with the ignited end entering the member 10 first. The cap 16 is then placed on the open end 14 thereof and the ignited cigarette or cigar is promptly extinguished. It is intended that the tobacco product receiving member 10 affords protection to a cigarette or cigar extinguished therein whereby the cigar or cigarette may be smoked at a later time.
It will be understood that the safety extinguisher, which is the subject of this invention, is intended to be a temporary depository for tobacco products and matches and that the same are emptied therefrom in a convenient safety 'extingnishewwill-be utilized'whenever a safe rubbish receiver is not available, such as in bed, in the back seats of certain cars, in buses and trains, etc.
The'operation 'of'this device will be understood from the foregoing description of the details'thereofi takenin connection with the above recited'objects and drawings. Further-description would appear tobe unnecessary.
'Minor modifications of the device, varying in minor detailsfromthe' embodiment of the device illustrated and described'here, may be resorted to without departure from the'spiri't and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claim.
7 Having described the invention, What is claimed as newis:
A safety extinguisher for ignited tobaccoproducts and matches comprising an elongated first tubular "member havinga'conical'closed end and an open end, said open end being flared to permit ease of entry of a tobacco product, arem'ovable cap normally closing said open end, a second'tubnlar member having a closed end and "an open end, the open end of said second tubular member being frictionally engaged-ove-r-said conical closed end, said second tubular member forming an extension of said first tubular member, a match receiving opening in said second tubular intermediate the ends thereof, said conical closed end and the open end of said second tubular member having walls of reduced thickness, mating surfaces of said walls being complementary.
