UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SMITH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
COMBINED CIGAR CASE AND EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,704, dated February 4, 1890.
Application filed July 30, 1889. Serial No. 319,204. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SMITH, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Cigar Case and Extinguisher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined cigar case and extinguisher, and has for its object to provide a case in which a lighted cigar may be placed, extinguished, and carried in the pocket and the partiallyburned cigar be preserved for further use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a case with an attached match-box and to so construct the case that when a cigar is placed therein and extinguished any odor will be effectually prevented from escaping.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 00 0c of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a similar section on line y y of Fig. 2.
The case A ispreferably made conical, as illustrated, and constructed in two sections 10 and 11, the section 10 being preferably shorter than the section 11. The two sections may be united by sliding one in the other, the section 10 being ordinarily slid in the section 11, or the contacting ends of the two sections may be threaded, so as to unite them by a screw-joint. The outer end of each section 10 and 11 is' closed, as shown at 12 and 13 in Fig. 2, and at the open end of the section 10 a ring 14 is introduced and secured, from one edge of which a series of curved spring-fingers 15 is projected in the direction of the. large inclosed outer end of the said section 10. The said fingers are so curved that their inner central faces are convexed, as is also best shown in Fig. 2.
Upon one side of the section 11 of the case a box 16 is longitudinally secured, which may extend, if desired, from end to end of this section, the said box being provided at one end with a cover 17, the purpose of the box being to contain matches.
In operation the lighted end of the cigar is inserted in the open end of the section 10, whereupon it is clamped by the spring-fingers 15. Before introducing the cigar into the section 10 it is best to remove the ashes and blow through the cigar in the direction of the lighted end to remove the smoke. After the lighted end of the cigar has been placed in the section 10 the said section and the cigar are introduced into the section 11. The joint between the two sections, by reason of the conical shape of the case, is very tight and permits no odor to escape. As air cannot enter the case, the lighted cigar is soon extinguished. The case cools so completely in a minute that it may be readily carried in the hand or placed in the pocket without discomfort. In fact, the case never becomes so hot but that it may be placed in the pocket immediately after the cigar has been placed therein. The fact that the partially-smoked cigar is held thus in an air-tight compartment tends more or less to add to its flavor, and the remnant when relighted has a taste as fine, if not finer, than when the cigar was first lighted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a cigar case and extinguisher comprising a conical body constructed in two sections, one section being provided with an exterior pocket and the other section with attached interior spring-fingers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN SMITH.
