This invention relates to card index boxes, and more particularly to boxes or cabinets of this kind for holding recipe cards, and for use as such in the kitchen.

Generally stated, the object of the inven tion is to provide a novel and convenient and durable box or cabinet for cards, preferably recipe cards, having means for holding the cards in storage position, in a satisfactory manner, and having also means for holding any particular card, when in use, in position to be conveniently read and inspected.

It is also an object to provide certain de tails and features of construction, tending to increase the general efficiency and the tie sirability of a card index box or cabinet of this particular character.

To the foregoing and other useful ends, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective of a box or cabinet for cards, embodying the principles of the invention, showing the same with the cover in open position, and with a portion of the cover broken away for convenience of illustration.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover in closed position, and showing a card in use, held in position to be conveniently read or inspected.

As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a box or cabinet body 1 of suitable height and formto contain the guide cards 2 be tween which the recipe cards, or other cards, are placed, in storage position, in a manner that will be readily understood. The said box or cabinet has a cover 3 which is hinged to the rear upper edge of the body at 4, in any suitable manner, so that the cover may be opened and closed in an easy and convenient manner. The body of thevbox o1 cabinet and the said cover therefor are preferably made of sheet metal, and for kitchen use are preferably enameled to make it possible to keep the box or cabinet clean, by washing, or otherwise.

hen a recipe card 5 is removed, for use, it is then placed in the card-holding means 6, on the front of the cover, such means being preferably in the form of portions of the sheet metal struck out fromlthe front wall of the cover, forming spring clips to frictionally hold the lower edge portion of the card, in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. With the cover in closed posi-. tion, and with the card in use thus positioned for easy reading and inspection thereof, the directions on the card can be easily followed, and the card is not liable to become soiled or. injured, as would probably happen if the card were laid on the sink, or on the stove, or on a table. Of course, the means for bolding the card in reading position on the box or cabinet can be of any suitable or desired form, but the means shown for this purpose are simple and inexpensive, and practically add nothing to the cost of manufacture of. the box or cabinet, and are effective and satisfactory for the purpose.

The front wall'and the side walls of the body 1 preferably have inwardly displaced upper end portions 7, as shown, which edge portions extend upwardly inside of the front and side walls of the cover when the latter is closed, thus keeping dust out of the cabinet, as the cover closes frictionally and tightly down outside of these portions, in a manner that will be readily understood.

lVith the construction shown, the side walls of the body slope downward to the front of the box or cabinet, so that the front wall of the body'is of less height than the rear wall thereof, and said cover has a front wall of greater height than the rear wall thereof, whereby the side walls of the cover are necessarily wider at their front ends than at their rear ends, but the cover having a front top wall which is level. when the cover is closed. In this way, the cards extend above the top of the body, when the cover is open, in the manner shown.

What I claim asmy invention is: r

1. In a card index box or cabinet, th combination of a portable body having front and rear and side and bottom walls, individually removable index cards in said body to receive individually removable memorandum cards between them, and a cover for the box or cabinet adapted to engage the upper edges of the body walls and forming With said body a. rectangular box for enclosing and holding said memorandum cards in storage position therein, together with means on the outside of the box or cabinet to support any memorandum card inposition for reading and inspection thereof, When the cover is in closed position.

combination of a portable body having front and rear and side and bottom walls, individually removable index cards in said body to receive individually removable memorandum cards between them, and a cover for the box or cabinet adapted to engage the upper edges of the body Walls and forming with said body a. rectangular box for enclosing and holding said memorandum cards in storage position therein, said cover having one or more external struck-out portions on the front Wall thereof, forming means to frictionally hold any one of said memorandum cards, when removed from said box, in position for reading and inspection thereof, when the cover is in closed position.

In a card index box or cabinet, the combination of a portable body having front and rear and side and bottom walls, individually removable index cards in said body to receive individually removable memorandum cards between them, and a cover for the box or cabinet adapted to engage the upper edges of the body Walls and forming with said body a rectangular box for enclosing and holding said memorandum cards in storage position therein, said cover having external means to hold any one of said memorandum cards, when removed from said box, in position for reading and inspection thereof, so that said cover is a combined closure and card support.

4. In a card index box or cabinet, a body having front and rear and side and bottom walls, cards in said body extending above said front wall, a cover hinged to said rear wall and having a front flange extending down to the upper edge ofsaid front Wall, and means on said flange to support any card removed from said body in upright position for inspection thereof. 7
