IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDER CLASPS AND BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Pati nt No. l72,675, dated January 25, 1876; application filed August 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ALFRED J. VANDRAKE, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented a Suspender Clasp and Button; add I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

The object of my invention is to provide a novel device for attaching or connecting buttons to clothing, ordifferent portions of clothing to each other, as a button for suspenders, or a stocking, sleeve, or dress-supporter.

Referring to the accompan yin g drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of the clasp in position for holding the fabric. Fig. 2 is a view, showing it ready to receive the fabric. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.

A is a button, .which is provided with a flat shank, B, this shank being bent so as to extend out some distance at right angles with the button. The end of this shank is made of considerable width, bent down and formed into teeth, as shown at O.

A second plate of metal, D, is bent into the form of a hook, as shown, and a slot made through it at the curve admits the hooked end of the shank B. Y

Two ears or lugs, e 0, upon the short arm of the plate D are pierced to admit pivots from the sides of the shank B, so that the latter can be turned upon these pivots. I

The operation will then be as follows: The shank B, with its button being turned up at to which the button is to be attached is then inserted between the teeth and the long arm, and the shank B being then turned down again, as in Fig. 1, the teeth 0 will be forced through the fabric, and thus hold it 'tirmly against the side of the plate D.

The button may then be used to attach anything to, as suspenders, &c.

The device may be readily released from thefabric at any time by simply turning it up at right angles, as previously described.

In some cases the teeth may be dispensed with, as the pressure will be sufficient to hold the fabric with a plain edge.

A hook or loop may be also substituted for the button, when desired.

With some modifications this clasp may be employed as an attachment for sleeve or stocking support, or for various uses, for which it will commend itself, from its simplicity, and

the ease with which it can be fastened and untastened.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A clasp, having shank B bent at both ends, one containing a button, A, and the other teeth 0, in combination with the bent plate I), to which it is hinged, substantially as shown and described.
