UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. STEVENS, NEW YORK, N. Y.
Gamma To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: H. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing. at New York, in the county of New York and 7 York, have invented certain new anduseful' Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garters, and one of the objects is to provide an attaching member for garters of such construction that it will securely hold the fabric of the stocking or garment and without danger of. tearing.
A further object is to provide a construction of garter including anovel attaching garter is adapted for use either as a side arter or a leg garter.
Other objects an "aims of the invention, more or less broad than those stated above, together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention; and
the scope of protection contemplated will appear from the claims.
In the accompanying d-rawin which are to be taken as part of this spec fication, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of a combined leg and side garter, showing it disposed for use as a leg garter; Fig; 2 is an elevation of the subject-matter of Fi 1 disposed for use as a side garter; and ig. 3 '1s a perspective view illustratin the form of attaching mem- Referringto the numerals on the drawings and particularly Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown at 16 agarter which comprises a relatively long portion and a shorter length 17 connected together'by means of a ring 18.
' At the free end of the longer portion 16 of the garter there is an attaching member indicated by the numeral 19, and shown in detail in Fi 3. This attaching member comprises a at frame, having an extensive cut-out portion 20 diminishing into a recurved slot 21. Adjacent the cut-out portion 20 the frameis formed with a hook member 22, which is merely a portion of the frame bent over. When the garter is to be used as a leg garter the frame 19 is turned on the looped end 24 of the length 16 sothat the looped end of the length 16 en- Specification of Letters 2mm.

the curved slot 21, while the hook portion 22 1s presented for engagement with gages in.
the ring 18. If the garter is to be used as a side garter the frame 19 is turned on the looped end of the length 16 of the garter until the, hooked end 22 is held within the loop 24 and the slotted end 21 is presented for engagement with the stocking ment. Whether the garter is use as a leg or gar garter or a side garter the end of the short length 17 will of course be provided with a member 25 for engagement with the stocking or garment. Preferably the portion of the frame 19 which carries the hook 22 is straight so that the looped end 24 of the garter will be properly spread; the sameresult is accomplished of course by the curved slot'21 when the garter is used as in Fig. 1.
Whenthe garter'of Figs. 1 and 2 is used as a side garter. the attaching member 19 is engaged with the stocking in the same way as the attaching member 25 shown in Fig. 1, that is to say, a bight of the fabric of the stocking or garment is pulled through the cut-out 20 and then allowed to drop down within the curved slot 21, where it tachin members shown in the drawings can be ma e of different materials; insome cases metal will be used and in others celluloid or the like. Of course care should be taken to have the. gripping edges in every case rounded or smoothed so as to avoid tearing of the garment.
Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be madewithout departing from the scope thereof, it is intendedthat all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A combined sideand leg garter comprising a short and a long length of material, a. joint 'member pivotally connecting the lengths of material at one end thereof, respectively, an attaching member on the other end of the short length of material, and an attachin member on the other end of the long len di of material and rotatably supported with relation thereto so that it may be turned end-for-end thereon, one end which the last named attaching member is provided with a garment engaging part on one end and with a hook on the other end.
3. A device as described in claim 2, in which thelast named attaching member is a piece having a top cross-bar, with a hook -material has a loop projecting therefrom, the piece below the bar being provided with an opening gradually diminishing in width toward one side of the piece and continuin at the bottom of the vplece as a slot, and t ence curved upwardly, whereby is formed a tongue integral with the piece and defined by the opening and the slot; and in which" the long length of end in which the piece 1s held so that it may be turned end-for-end,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a 4
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WM. H. STEVENS.
