Description

fr. HIPWELL; FRUIT-JAP. CLAMP.
N.17z,3 1e, l Patented :an.1a,1a7s.`
Wim L Lw/fd' f s www auf@ @WQ/ff UNITED ISfrlrrns PATENT @Enron THOMAS HIPWELL', OF BRIDGETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE OOHANSEY GLASS-MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JAR CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 172,316, dated January 18, 1876; application tiled october 25, 1875.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HrPweLL, of Bridgeton, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Screw-Clamps or Locking Devices for Jars and other Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled "in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of the said invention applied to a fruit-jar and its lid; and Fig. 2 is a similar elevation, showing the same parts as they appear when turned one-fourth round from the position shown in Fig. l.
The same parts are denoted by the same letters in both ii'gures.
This invention is an improvement in screwclamps or locking devices for fastening lids on jars and similar vessels. Its object is to secure the clamp to the lid, and to this end it consists in forming a crook or bend in the clamp, in the manner hereinafter described.
Ain the drawing represents the upper part of a jar; B, the lid, and G a ringmade of metal wire or other suitable material, and forming a screw-clamp, by which A and B are secured together. The ends of the ring may be disconnected, or they may be soldered together, or joined by a shield or rivet, or in any other suitable way. D D are the hooks or lugs bends F F, which, after it has been sprung on the lid, keep it from coming ofand thus enable it to be used in combination with a lid such as shown in the drawing, which has no upper dan ge forming a groove above the liange G for the reception of the clamp; or it may be used with a lid having such groove, the eect of which is to relieve the pressure of the clamp against the lid. The crooks F may be made either in the hooksD or at intermediatepoints in the ring, forming short hooks between D D, or the ring may be made with short hooks, and also with crooks in the long hooks, as shown in the drawing. p
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A screw-clamp or locking device constructed with short hooks, adapted t'or securing it to the lid, and also with long hooks, adapted for securing the lid to the jar, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, substantially as shown and described, of the lid B and screw-clamp C, constructed with one or more crooks or bends, F.
THOMAS HIPWELL.
