UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRIAM ABIGER FOSTER, OF PORT CLINTON, OHIO.
COMBINED CAN HOLDER AND FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,199, dated February 25, 1890.
Application filed September 4, 1889. $erial N0.322,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRIAM ABIGER Fos- TER,acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Clinton, in the county of Ottawa and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Can Holder and Filler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined can holder and filler, and the object of the invention is the production of a simple and inexpensive device which will be capable of securely holding and filling a can jar, or other cylindrical vessel.
To attain these objects the invention consists of the device illustrated, described, and claimed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved device in operative position. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device with the parts detached to more clearly illustrate their construction.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the handles of the device, having the concave faces 2 adapted to engage the cylindrical object or vessel, and the bulging or curved portion 3, which forms fulcrums for the clamping-band.
The numerals 4E and 5 designate the clamping-bands, which are firmly secured at one of their ends to the handle, and the band 4 is provided at its free end with a sleeve or guide 4:, and with a series of slots or openings 4 and the band 5 slides in the sleeve 4: of the band 4, and is formed at its free end with a hook 5, adapted to engageany one of the se ries of slots or openings 4 To each of the bands is connected one of the ends of the bars or rods 6, in this instance the bands being formed with openings and the rods having their ends bent and engaging said openings; but they may be connected to the bands in any desired manner. These rods may be termed guide-rods,. as on them is sustained and guided the funnel or hopper 7, which has a flange provided with openings 9, through which the rods 6 pass. 011 the rod 6 are stops 6 to retain the hopper.
The manner of using the device will be readily apparent, as it is only necessary to grasp the object within the clamping-bands, arrange and adjust the hopper above the mouth of thejar, can, or other object, and fill the same therethrough.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described device, consisting of handles provided with curved bands constructed to surround a vessel and holding the same, said curved bands being provided at diametrically-opposite points with perforations, in combination with a filling-hopper provided with an annular flange having diametrically opposite perforations, vertical guide-rods having their upper ends passing through the perforations in the annulartlange of the hopper and their lower ends bent inwardly to engage the perforations of the curved bands, and stops located upon the vertical guide-rods beneath the annular flange of the hopper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EPHRIAM ABIGER FOSTER.
