G. L. ALLEN. CAN OPENER.
No. 463,131. Patented Nov. 17,1891.
WitI @ssas: Inueznto 11.
Fltt'g- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. ALLEN, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
CAN-OPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,131, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed December 27, 1890- Serial No. 375,937- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be' it known that I, GEORGE L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Can- Opener, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct from a single rod of spring metal or wire a Wrench provided with different-sized loops, forming wrench-seats for opening cans of dif ferent sizes, all as more particularly described and claimed below. t
In the drawing forming a part of this specification is shown the wrench complete.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawing, A A represent the handles formed by folding the ends of the wire a short distance back upon said wire, and where the ends of said wire terminate kinks c c are formed in the wire to receive said ends and to form part of the curvature of the first loop or seat of the Wrench. From thence the wire at the sides is extended and bowed outward to form the sides B B of the larger loop or wrench-seat. At the upper end of these bows B B the wire is again kinked, as at e 6, above which the wire bows around from onekink to the other, forming a smaller loop or wrench-seat C.
In the operation, if it is desired to close or handles A A toward each other with the hand said loop is firmly clamped against said cap, and then it can be screwed on or ofl. If a larger sized can is to be opened or closed, the same action takes place, except the larger loop is placed over the cap and clamped against the same, as before.
'While I have described the handles of the can-opener as being formed by bending the wire back upon itself, it will appear obvious that any suitable handles may be attached to the double looped can-opener. made from a single piece of Wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A jar-opener made 'from a piece of wire, consisting of the handles, the bowed sides joining said handles and forming the largest seat, kinks between said bows and handles forming part of the curvature of said seat, kinks at the other ends of said bows, and the loop joining said latter-named kinks and constituting the smaller seat, substantially as set forth.
In testimony to the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. ALLEN.
