Description
13A. PHILLIPPI.
SPINNING-TOP. I N0.17Z',165. Patented Jan. 11, 1876.
UNrr D STATES OF SAME PLACE.
PATENT Orrron.
- FRANCIS A. PHILLIPPI, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO J. FRANK SEIGEL AND ALBERT THALHELMER,
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,166, dated January 11, 1876; application filed November 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. A. PHILLIPPn'of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Humming-Tops; and .I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
ning the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, the pivot-bearings being in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top only.
A represents the top, made in the form of a bell, and provided on one side with a crack, a, to represent the old IndependenceBell of 1776. The bell has also apertures 11 b, so as to make it a humming-top when spun around. The bottom of the hell or top A is closed, and a central shaft, d, is passed through the same, both' ends of said shaft being pointed, .as shown. At the upper end of the bell A is formed a neck, 6, around which the string is to be wound for spinning the top.
The top thus constructed has upon one side the figures 1776, and upon the other side the figures 1876, and I propose to call it the Centennial Top.
B represents the handle, made of a single piece of wire, coiled in the center to form a spring, f, and the ends bent or curved in the y 7 form shown, and thus fastened together. In the two arms or jaws h h of the handle are made recesses w m, for the insertion of the pointed ends of the spindle d of the bell A. The top is held in the handle B by pressing the jaws or arms h h together, and the string 6, having. been previously wound around the neck e, is then pulled, spinning the top in said arms, and when the'arms are released the top will pass from the same, and spin in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the wire handle B, constructed'as shown, forming a coiled spring, f,
and-handle, spread outward in the center, and its ends soldered together, with the bellshaped top A, having spindle d and neck c, all substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS A. PHILLIPPI.
