UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. BROWN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,080, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAS. N. BROWN, of
- Providence, in the county of Providence and open and close to fit different-sized books, as
will be hereinafter more fully set'forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bookholder, showing a bookin position thereon; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the book holder.
My book-holder is made of a single piece of spring-wire, bent as shown, to form a center support, A, for the backside of the bottom of the book, finger-holders B B for pressing the center backward against it, while the bottom edges of the corer rest upon side bars 0 U, and the body of the book is held at the back by the inclined angular sides l) D,supported from the small curves E E in the back, and the large curves F F in front, while the leaves are held to either side by the thumb-holders G G.
To insert the book in the holder, open and hold the book in one hand, taking it by the top, and placing the thumb crosswise ot' the two open pages; then place the center of the back against the top of the angular sides D D, and with the thumb and first finger of the other hand draw back thefinger-holders B B until there is more than sufficient room to slide the book downward, so that the bottom is in front of the center bar A, and the side covers rest'upon the side bars 00.. Then let the fingers B B strike in the center, and the thumbs G G will secure the sides properly.
It the book is opened at the beginning or closing portion, place the back one side of the center, the thick portion bearing against the top of both of the angular sides D D, andthe two fingers B B resting wholly upon the side of the thick portion, and only one thumbholder Gr touching the thin portion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described book-holder, made of a single piece of spring-Wire, bent to form the center bar A, finger-holders B B, side bars-O 0, inclined angular'sides D D, rear and front curves E E, and the thumb-holders G G, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of November, 1875.
CHARLES N. BROVN.
