Description

July 9, i C. T. YALVE MECHANISM FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed July 27,- 1927 Inventar C. Z0606 /r,
Am rnqy Patented July 9, 1929.
UNITED STATES.
CHARLES T. LOBAGK, OF SIKESTON, MISSOURI.
VALVE MECHANISM FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed July 27, 1927.
The present invention relates to valve mechanisms for internal combustion engines, and more particularly to a valve of this class which is located between the cylinder block and cylinder head.
The principal objects of the invention are to locate a combined intake and exhaust valve for four cycle motors between the cylinder block and cylinder head in such a position that the gases can be quickly drawn in and exhausted, to operate said valve by means of a cam mechanism, and to so construct and arrange the parts that they can be easily disposed for repair.
Another very important object of the i11- vcntion resides in the provision of a valve mechanism of this nature which is simple in its crmstruction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and du able, thoroughly eilicient and reliable in operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a cylinder construction showing my improved valve mechanism incorporated therein,'and,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional View thereof.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes a cylinder block having the cylinder 6 bored therein in the usual manner and jacketed as at 7 The usual piston 8 reciprocates in the cylinder .6. T he numeral 9 denotes a cylinder head which is fitted on the cylinder block in any iu'eferred or desired manner. ,A threaded opening 10 provided in the center of the cylinder head 8 for the reception of a spark plug 11. T he upper edge of the cylinder block 5 about the cylinder 6 is formed with an annular recess or channel 12 and the lower edge of the cylinder head is formed with a similar recess or groove 14: registering therewith for rotatably receiving a ring valve member 15. The
i ider block and head. are provided with s it for intaliza and exhaust purj ioses and Serial No. 208,866.
the ring valve 15 is provided with a single port 18 which will be brought into registry with the ports 16 and 17 as the ring valve oscillates. This ring valve oscillates by means of a projection 19 operating in a cam groove 20 of a drum or rotary member 21 on a shaft 22 which is journaled in bearings 23 provided in the cylinder block to one side thereof, said cylinder block being formed with an opening 2 1 in which the drum or rotatable member 21 extends and allows the proper move ment of the projection 19.
The shaft 22 will be operated in any preferred manner at one-half crank shaft speed and will register the opening 18 with the ports 16 and 17 at proper intervals for the usual four-cycle operation as will be readily understood by those skilled in this art.
It is thought that the construction, operation and utility of the invention will be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. It will be seen that the valve structure may be manufactured very cheaply, is very easy to assemble and disassemble, be cause of its accessibility when the block is removed. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit 01' scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is In a valve mechanism for internal combustion engines, a cylinder, a removable cylinder head, said cylinder and said cylinder head having annular grooves concentric with the axis of the cylinder at their meeting edges to form an annular recess, a ring valve in said recess, said cylinder having ports, said ring valve having a port, and means for oscillating the ring valve.
In. testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
