UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY A. CLIFFORD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,919, dated January 11, 1876; application filed October 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. CLIFFORD, of Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement inShirt-Bosoms, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a shirt-bosom either permanently connected with a shirt-body, or a false bosom, to be applied or removed at the option of the wearer, and capable of being, and designed to be, inverted, so that, when one end of the bosom is soiled, the bosom may be removed from the shirt and inverted in position, so that the soiled end is concealed behind the vest and'the fresh end is exposed as a shirt-front. Then, too, if the bosom be permanently connected with the body of the shirt, it is demonstrated by experience that the linen surface receives most injury by wear at the sides and adjoining the neck-band B O B. The bosom being worn can be removed and inverted, so that what and is concealed from sight, while what was the lower end becomes the upper end, and is unworn and fresh, thus afi'ording an important opportunity to economize in wear and in washing. I
In the accompanying drawing, B O B and B G B represent the bands, and the B B O O B B marks represent button-holes. The" surface marked A represents the bosom of the shirt.
1 am aware" of the fact that false bosoms have long been in use but do not know, nor do I believe, that shirt-bosoms manufactured in the way that I have described, and adapted to the purposes hereinbefore set forth,-have ever been made.
Having thus described my invention, the best Way of making which is in the manner herein set forth, I claim- The reversible bosom A with the neck-bands B U B B O B, constructed substantially as described, and adapted to the uses herein set forth.
MARY A. CLIFFORD.
