NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED LAPEL VEST AND OVERSHIRT.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 316,803, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed May 1, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABE. W. MENSOR, of Jacksonville, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention'consists in a combined lapel vest and overshirt, with duplicate bosoms and a series of cuffs to match, whereby the same garment is made to answer different uses and to present different bosoms and cuffs, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a front view of my improved garment with different exposures of the bosoms and cuffs on its right and left hand sides.
A is the vest, which may be made of cloth or other suitable material, and which may have sleeves B B, of like material, having turnover cuffs b b, slit or made open in direction of their length, and secured by buttons or hooks c. Said vest may be put onby an opening, (1, in its back. It also opens in front, as at e, and may be closed by buttons f, either all the way up by closing its one bosom-lapel, 9, over the other, or said portions 9 9 may be thrown back and secured, as shown, to form an open vest or open overshirt, as desired. Furthermore, said vest is constructed in front to form front lower lapels, h h,over a body part, 0, which constitutes the tail of the shirt, and is of the same material as the vest. This tail of the shirt is tucked inside the pants with the lower lapels, h, remaining outside, thereby exposing a perfect vest, or said lapels h h, as well as the tail 0, may both be put inside the pants, the bosom-lapels g 9 closed, and the cuffs b I) turned down, when the garment will form an overshirt. I
Secured to the inside of the vest by buttons, hooks, lacings, or otherwise are two independent bosonis, D E, arranged one over the other, and which may beof different materials or patterns, and the outer one, D, of which is made to open, forming a lapel, i, on either side, which may lie under the lapels g of the vest, and, if desired, be secured thereunder by buttons or hooks, thereby fully exposing the under bosom, E, or said lapels z may be closed and buttoned one over the other, thus concealing the bosom E and exposing the full bosom D, that is here represented (No model.)
as a check one, while the under bosom, E, may be supposed to be a plain or white one. The patternsor styles of these bosoms, however, may vary.
Each sleeve B is similarly fitted with two independent slit or opening and closing cuffs,
G H, the outer one, G, of which may correspond with the pattern of the outer bosom, D, and the inner one, H, with the other bosom, E.
By opening the vest-bosom lapels g g and turning up the cuffs b and putting the tail portion 0 of the garment inside of the pants with the lower lapels, h h, outside, also closing the lapels i of the bosom D, the garment will form a vest with the shirt-.bosom D exposed, or by tucking the lapels h h also inside the pants will form an open -bosomed overshirt and undershirt bosom D with cuffs Gto correspond with the bosom in either or both of such uses of the garment. Again, by holding the lapels i of the bosom D under the open lapels gof the vest and turning and buttoning the cuffs G up over the cuffs b, then the bosom E and cuffs H will be exposed in a similar relation with the rest of the garment as were the bosom D and cuffs G, making. either a vest and undershirt exposure or overshirt and undershirt exposure, accordingly as the tail portion 0 only or tail portion and lapels h are tucked into the pants.
, I do not restrict my invention to the use of any particular materials or means of fastening the several adjustable portions of the garment. This applies not only to the bosoms D E, but also to the cuffs G H, which, when turned up, should be buttoned or otherwise secured to their places. Both bosoms and cuffs may be removed for washing 0r substitution, as re quired. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, the vest A, having bosom-lapels 9, lower lapels. h, tail portion O, sleeves B, having turn-over cuffs b, the detachable bosoms D E, the outer one of which is made to open and close in front, and the detachable cuffs G H, formed of like material with the said bosoms, for the purpose set forth.
I ABE. W. MENSOR. Witnesses:
JAMES LITTLE, L. G. COLEMAN.
