Description

I HAIR WAVING DEVICE Filed Aug. 13, 1928 jg a. Z.
' Patented June 18, 1929. i V
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. GAIBE, OF PATEB/SON, NEW JERSEY.
HAIB-WAVING DEVICE.
Application filed August 13, 1928. Serial No. #299,413.
' waved is wound about a curler inclosed in a steam bore which is ipsulated to prevent the steam box from heating up exterlorly.
Another object of the invention is to pro-v vide a permanent hair waver which embodies a curler element on which the hank of hair to be waved is clamped and wound, and which is placed with the wound hair thereon, into a steam box constructed of a pair of separable sections held tightly together by suitable clamping. means and into which steam is passed to act upon the wound hair to place a permanent curl or wave therein. 1 With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hair waver in use.
Figure 2 is'a side elevation of the hair waver. Figure 3is an end elevation Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view'on the line 44 of Figure 3.
I Figure5 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a similar view on the line .6-6 of Figure 4.
' Figure'i' is a side elevation of the curler element per se.
Figure8 is a fragmentary perspective view of the steam box looking at one end thereof. Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my im-' proved hair waving device in its entirety which includes a curler element 11 and a steam box or housing 12 for receiving the same. The
curler element comprises an elongated shank 13 which is circular in cross section and gradually decreases in diameter from its opposite ends lnwardly to provide a concave surface.
Pivoted to a clam in ring 14 encircling one ofthe reduced en s o the shank, is a clamping tongue 15 of ashape fit snug against are in co-acting ositions.
the shank when in clamping position. The
extreme ends of the shank are provided with disks or flanges 16 having aligned sets of. openings 17 therein, which sets of openings are at varied spaced distances from the axis of the shank for interchangeably receiving a longitudinal rod 18'. clamp the curler element to the hair of the hank of hair wound about the shank, and may be inserted into any of the sets of openings 17, depending upon the, thickness of the wound hair thereon.
The steam box 12 includes a pair of sep arable housing sections 18 and 19 which are closed at opposite ends and semi-circular in cross section to provide a housing which is ing up. For removably connecting the sections together, I provide one end of the housmg section 18 with an outstanding "lug 22 having slots 23 therein for receiving the respective tongues 24 projecting from one end of the section'19. The tongue and slot connection provides a separable hinge joint to allow the section to be swung 0 en and closed, and separated if desired. T e sections are securely locked in a. closed position by a pivoted bolt 25 mounted on the section 19 which is received ina notched lug 26 projecting from the section 18; A thumb nut 27 is The rod 18 acts to threaded to the free end of the bolt-and is Y screwed down tight against the In tight maintain the edges of the sections in engagement with each other.
.Thesection 18 is provided with a nipple 28 centrally thereof to which one 'end of a steam v hose or tube 29 is attached. The other end of the hose connects with a suitable source of steam supply to enable the 4 steam box to be filled with steam during a hair waving operation. Steam vent openings 30 are provided in.
the housing section 18 to permita limited amount of steam to escape to prevent any. possibility of the steam-box blowing u t In practice a hank of ha1r is wound a out the curler element 11 by clamping the ends of the hank beneath the tongue 15, whereupon the hank of hair is wound upon the curler element as shown in Figure 4 of the drawin The curler element with the hair tightT;
wound thereon is next placed in a steam box and the same securely clamped in a closed position. The operator proceeds to turn on the steam control valve to permit steam to pass through the hose 29 and fill the interior of the steam box. The action of the heat and steam upon the tightly Wound hair produces a permanent Wave therein which is believed more eflieient than those heretofore produced by other hair Waving devices. My hair waver will also be found safe in use as it will not burn the seal or hair of the user due to the interior insu ation and can be applied and removed in more rapid time than other devices of this kind. v
It might be well to mention that the shape of the shank and clamping tongue of the curler element permits the perfect winding of uneven cut hair thereon, which adapts the device for use in waving bobbed hair of different style cuts.
While I have described what I deem to be the best embodiment of my invention it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in anyway departing from the 1. A hair Waving device including a housa ing embodying a pair of elongated co-acting sections hingedly connected at one end thereof, a hair curler element on which the hair to be waved is wound and being snugly receivable within said housing, means at the other end of said section for locking the same in closed position, and a steam hose connected to said housing for supplying steam thereto.
2. In a hair waving device, a shank provided with flanges on its outer ends a clamping tongue pivotally mounted on said shank for clamping the ends of a hank of hair before winding thereon, and a rod removably supported by said flanges for preventing accidental unwinding of the hank of hair after Winding.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
