SAFETY DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed August 11, 1927'. Serial No. 212,305.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastening devices and aims to provide a highly novel, simple and efficient door fastener wherein swinging doors may be positively fastened from the inside other than through the agency of the usual key lock associated with practically all types of swinging doors. l urthermore, the construction of this particular fastener is such that it will be im possible to release the same from the outside with. the obvious result that the door cannot be opened from the outside even though the usual locks or latching devices associated with the doors may be effectively released.
The invention further aims to provide a fastening device that may be easily applied or that may be readily released when it is desired to open the door from the inside, and that will not to any marked degree mar or otherwise injure the door or door jamb.
In the drawing wherein like references indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof:
Figure 1 is a horizontal fragmentary section through the free edge of a swinging door and its adjacent jamb structure disclosing my safety fastener as applied, the dotted lines representing the position of certain structural elements when applying or releasing the fastener.
Figure 2 is an elevation of one side of the fastener, and
Figure 3 is a detail horizontalsection there through.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, A designates fragmentarily a conventional si'vinging door, while B designates that particular portion of the door jambadjacent the free edge of the door, which jamb is provided with the usual door latch bolt socket 6 arranged upon the outer'side of which is the usual metallic plate a. My invention per se consists of a pair of narrow metallic plates 5 and 6 of predetermined length that r are hingedly connected adjacent their opposite edges by suitable hinges 7 7 At their inner ends these plates 5 and 6 are longitudinally slot-ted so as to provide an elongated slot 8 when the plates 5 and 6 have been arranged in longitudinal alinement as disclosed in th several views.
The forward end of the plate 5 is provided with a laterally extending beveled head 9 provided for engagement within the latch bolt socket b of the door jamb B as clearly in dicated in Figure 1. The opposite surface of this plate 5 is formed with transversely extending teeth 10 While slidably arranged upon this surface of said plate 5 is a metallic plate 11, the inner face of which is also formed with teeth for mesh with the teeth of the plate 5 as more clearly disclosed in Figure 1. The inner surface of said plate 11 is formed centrally with a lug 12 for sliding engagement within the slot 8 of said plates 5 and 6 so as to prevent the turning of said plate 11 with respect to either of said plates 5 or 6. Furthern'iore, the inner end of the plate 11 is formed with a lateral extension 13 for abutting engagement with the inner side of the door A after the same has been swung to the closed position, as indicated in Figure 1.
In hack of the lug 12 said plate 11 is formed with an opening through which is arranged a screw 1 1 while threaded upon the inner threaded end 'of this screw is a thumb nut 15 that when screwed inwardly upon the screw will bear against the plate 11 to firmly bind the same upon the plate 10 to prevent. longitudinal sliding movement of the plate 11 with respect to said plate 5. How ever, after the device has been applied as indicated by the full lines in Figure 1 in which position the door A is firmly fastened, the device may be easily removed by releasing the screw 15 and thence sliding the plate 11 rearwardly on the hinged plate 6, whereupon said hinged plate may be swung inwardly as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1 for removing the headed end of the plate 11 from the door A whereupon said door may be opened. in the usual manner and the device removed.
In view of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it. will at once be apparent that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and extremely efficient safety fastener for swinging doors that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated even though I have herein shown and described. the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a safety door fastener of the character described, a pair of late members, a hinge connection between Elie adj aoent ends of the the free edge of the door when the same is closed, and means engageable through said 1 sliding plate and through the slot in said hinged plate whereby said plate may be secured to either of said plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MICHAEL DORION.
