Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. VVINSLOVV, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,179, dated April 28, 1857.
To all wiz-0m t may concern,
Be it known that I, JOHN A. I/VINsLow,of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have linvented a new and useful Improvement on Skates; and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact description.
My invention consists in applying to the bottom of t-he skate, a second iron runner. In the ordinary skate, a single runner is placed along the line of axis, this runner being comparatively very narrow; persons alone experienced, are enabled to balance themselves with freedom of motion. Prac tice has demonstrated to me, that two runners afford equal facility of action, with a larger and irmer basis for the foot to rest on, and the acquisition of ease, when not skating, which the balancing exertion on the narrow one iron, forbids. In order to accomplish this, I manufacture a skate in the ordinary way, and instead of having one iron runner, I manufacture two, similar in all respects to each other, but lighter than the runner in the ordinary skate, to obviate additional weight. These two runners I attach to the bottom of the skate, outside of the central line of axis, and parallel or nearly so with it (this is not material, as the points `may converge a little.) The position I place them at, is one third of an inch, greater or` less (as required for learners, or otherwise,) from the central line; as is seen in the annexed drawings; a', being one iron, and the other.
. What I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application, of a second metal runner to the skate which being placed on the bottom outside of the central line of axis; and the runner, in the ordinary skate which lies along that line, removed to a correspondent position, on the other side, completes the improvement.
JOHN A. I/VINSLOI/V.
