Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.t
JAS. S. EUBANK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 'lO WILLIAM EVERDELL, JR.
SPUR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,338, dated January 30, 1855.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAS. S. EUBANK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs for Horsemen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification. c
The nature of the improvement consists in constructing the branches or clasp, supporting and carrying the shank or stem for the rowel, in two pieces; and by means of a suitable screw nut upon the stem said branches are made to compress themselves upon the heel of the boot or'shoe of the wearer, and are thus securely prevented from displacement therein.
' In the drawings the principle of my invention is delineated by two modes of oper- B is a hinge piece on which arms a, a, are secured by pins at c, c, and upon which they move, from B rises a stem or shank D carrying on its end the rowel 5.
E is a screw nut working on the screw f, its under face is concave so as to `insure the outer edge coming in Contact with the shoulders e e of the branches a a outside of the pivots c c, thus necessarily compressing the branches toward each other, and securely fastening the spur to the heel. In the same manner the conical screw F, Fig. 4 operates by expanding the upper ends g, g, of the arms a a, and effects the same result.
Having described my improvement, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent isy 1. The construction of a spur having a divided hinge branch a a for embracing the heel of the boot or shoe.
2. Also I claim'the mode of' sustaining the divided branches a a by means of the shoulder screw nut, either as constructed by having said nut E with its bearing outsidev of the hinge of the jaws, or as sustained by means of the cone F, substantially as described in the foregoing specification.-`
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES s. EUBANK.
