Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL PECKHAM, OF PETERSHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR DRESSING CONICAL TAPERING- SUB/FACES.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 13,180, dated July 3, 1855.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PAUL PECKHAM, of Petersham, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Machine for Dressing Tapering Sticks; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the follo-wing specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
The purpose of my invention is to dress or round a tapering stick of wood, so that while it has one flat surface, the rest of it, in transverse section, may be in the form of a segment of a circle.
My machine is intended particularly for rounding ladder poles or sticks to the form shown in Figures l, 2, and 3, of the drawings, which denote top and end views of such a stick when so dressed. Fig. Il, is a plan of my said machine. Fig. 5, is a vertical and longitudinal section of it. Fig. 6, is an end view of it.
In t-hese drawings, last mentioned, A, exhibits the frame of the machine, on which is supported in tubular bearings, a tubular rotary cutter stock B, whose left end is provided with one or more cutters, a, a. Through the bore, b, of this cutter stock a bar or rest, C, is extended, the same being supported by a rocker frame D, which is hinged to the frame A, as seen at d, d, and hasv a screw, F, applied to it so as to enable an attendant to either elevate it above or depress it toward the top surface of the frame A. A roller, Gr, to keep the stock down to the rest may be applied to the frame, A, and over the rest as seen in Figs. 4, and 5.
In dressing a stick the cutter stock is put in revolution on its aXis by a belt applied to a pulley, H, fixed to such stock. The tapering stick is then introduced with its smaller end foremost into the mouth of the bore of the stock, the Hatside of the stick being supported on the rest C. This done, the said rest is elevated so as to raise the stick up to the cutters far enough for them to suiiiciently reduce the upper surface of the interior end of the stick. The stick is next forced forward into and through the bore, and the rest is depressed as the thickness of the stick increases to-ward the superior end, the stick being gradually rounded so that in Whatever part of it a section be taken transversely to the stick, such section shall present the form of the segment of a circle.
My machine is particularly intended for rounding the side pieces of ladders. In Figs. 4 and 5, the stick is represented in red lines.
I claim- The arrangement and application of the depressing rest C, with respect to the hollow tubular cutter stock substantially as described so as to enable a perso-n to dress or round a tapering stick of wood in manner as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 30th day of April A. D.
PAUL PECKHAM.
