Description
UNITED STATES PATNT OFFICE.l
N. C. SANFORD, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
SKATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,426, dated February 20, 1855.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, N. C. SANFORD, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawing, making a part of this specication, said ydrawing being a longitudinal section of the skate. I
This invention relates to a new and kuseful improvement in skates, and consists in attaching the runner to the stock in a peculiar way, as will be hereafter shown, whereby a requisite degree of. elasticity is given the skate.
To enable others skilled in the art, to fully understand andv construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the stock of the skate, which is of the usual form, and B, is the runner.
C, C, are knees firmly secured to the runner, and having circular disks, (an) at their upper ends, one to each, said disks being somewhat larger in diameter than the knees, which are of cylindrical form.
D, D, are tubes or cylinders, placed vertically within the stock, A, and having plates, (5,) secured over their upper and lower ends, said plates being letin the stock, so as to be flush with its upper and lower surfaces. The plates, (6,) are secured inl their proper place by screws, (c).
The disks, a1, of the knees, C, C, lit within the tubes or cylinders, D, D, and india rubber, (CL) 0r other suitable elastic material is placed in the tubes or cylinders, above the disks (a), the upper portion of the indiav rubber, or other material used, bearing against the under surfaces of the upper plates, (b). The lower plates, b) have circular openings made through t em, the diameter of which corresponds to that of the knees, to allow the knees to pass intothe tubes or cylinders.
The stock, A, may be constructed of wood, and the tubes or cylinders, D, and plates, (ZJ) of metal, the runner, B, of course, being of metal, steel being preferable.
It will be seen that a degree of elasticity is given the skate in consequence of the disks, (a, (L) bearing against the elastic material .in the tubes or cylinders, D, and the runner B is irmly secured to the stock because the disks, (a, a) lit snugly in the tubes or cylinders, and the knees also have a bearing in the lower plates, i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Securing the runner, B, to the stock, A, by having disks, (a, a,) on the upper ends of the knees, C, C, the disks, (a, a) being fitted within tubes or cylinders D, D, in the stock, the tubes or cylinders, having a suitable elastic material within them, and their upper and lower ends, covered by plates, (b) secured to the stock, whereby a requisite degrec of elasticity is given the skate, as here in shown and described.
N. C. SANFORD.
