Description

June 18, 1929. 1', E; v 5 1,717,422
UMBRELLA TAG Filed Sept. 17, 1928 Inventor Attornqy Patented June 18, 1929.
UNITED STATES THOMAS E. VINESKI, OF TROY, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA TAG.
Application filed September 17, 1928.
The present invention relates to improvements in identification tags and has for its principal object to provide identification tag for association with an umbrella, said tag having thereon the name and address of the owner of the umbrella whereby the umbrella may be identified by the proper party whenever the occasion arises.
Still a further object is to provide an umbrella identification tag that can be readily and easily attached or removed with respect to the umbrella stick or rod, said tag being further of such construction as not to inter fere with the use of the umbrella either in closing or opening the same.
A further object is to provide an umbrella identification tag of the above mentioned character that issimple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed. 7
Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side'elevation of the urnbrella tag embodying my invention showing the same mounted on the conventlonal umbrella stick or rod adjacent the handle, the tag being shown in its closed position,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the tag opened,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Figure 1,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of the base plate of the identification tag.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a base plate that is formed from an elongated strip of metal and laterally extending bendable ears 2 are formed on each of the sides of the base plate at its respective ends whereby said base plate may be securely clamped around an umbrella stick or rod A adjacent the handle B in the manner as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3.
The intermediate portion of the base plate is formed with a longitudinal slot 3 to accommodate the rolled ear 4 formed on the inner longitudinal edge portion of the cover plate 5 at the central portion thereof where- Serial No. 306,430. g
by to provide a hinge connection between the base plate 1 and the cover plate 5.
The cover .plate is also formed from a single strip of metal and formed on the forward longitudinal free edge of the cover plate at the central portion thereof is the curved lip 6 that engages over the adjacent free edge portion of the base plate 1 to secure the cover plate in a closed position.
A strip of paper 7 bearing suitable indicia such as the address of the owner of the umbrella is glued on the upper face of the base plate 1 while glued to the bottom face of the cover plate 5 is a similar strip of paper 8 on which is affixed the name of the owner.
The indicating indicia may bearranged on the base plate and cover plate in any other manner if so desired. When the cover plate is closed, the indicating indicia are concealed and should the umbrella become lost or mixed up with similar umbrellas, the identification tag will readily indicate to whom the umbrella belongs.
The simplicity of my identification tag en-. ables the same to be constructed at a very low cost and the tag can be readil and easily attachedor detachedon the umbrella stick. Furthermore the identification tag will not interfere with the opening or closing of the umbrella or with the handling of the same.
VVhile'I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may. be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. An identification tag comprising a base plate having indicating indicia arranged 9 thereon, attaching means carried by the base plate, said base plate being formed with a longitudinal slot adjacent one edge thereof, a cover piate for the indicating indicia 011 the base plate, a rolled ear formed on one longitudinal edge of the cover plate and rotatably disposed in said slot, and a curved lip formed on the opposite longitudinal edge of the cover plate for engagement over the adjacent portion of the corresponding edge of the base plate to secure the cover plate in a closed posi-, tion.
2. An identification tag comprising a base plate adapted to have indicating indicia arranged on the outer face thereof, bendable ears extending laterally from the sides of the base plate at each end thereof for attaching the same around an umbrella stick, said base plate being formed with a longitudinal slot adjacent one of its longitudinal edges,a cover plate for the indicating indioia on the base plate, said cover plate having indicatingindicia arranged on the inner side thereof, a rolled ear formed on one longitudinal edge of 10 the cover plate rotatably disposed in the slot in the base plate to provide a hinge connection between the cover plate and the base plate, and a curved lip formed on the other edge of the cover plate for engagement over the adjacent portion of the correspondingedge of the base plate to secure the cover plate in closed position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
THOMAS E. VINESKI.
