- K. F. SCHIONIGER FOLDING CAN OPENER Filed Aug. 31 1923 MY m V 0 w n x A. m
Patented Sept. 2, 1924.
* UNITED ,STATES,
KNUD FREDERICK SCEIONIGEB, O1 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
, FOLDING CAN OPENER.
Application filed August 81, 1923. Serial No. 800,419.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, KNUD F. Scmomenu, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Can Opener, of which, the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in can openers, especially those which are designed to be carried in the pocket, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed. 1
An object of m invention is to provide a can opener in w oh the cutting blade is' foldable with a guard for holding the blade in its folded position so that it may be carried in the pocket without any danger of cutting the latter, or of injuring the owner.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple folding can opener which may be folded into small compass so as to take up very little room, and which may be used by. campers, tourists, or the like.
A further object of my invention is to v provide a device which can be made up at small cost since it is entirely stamped out.-
Other 0 jects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularl pointed out in the appended claim.
y invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the guard thrown back.
Figure 2 1s a view of one face of the device showing the guard in its closed position,
Figure 3 is a view of thevopposite face,
Fi 4 is a side elevation of the can, showing the manner in which the device is manipulated, and
Figure 5 is a section through the can with the cutter in position at right angles to the position shown in Figure 4.
In carrying out my invention I provide a body portion 1 which consists of merely a flat metal plate. It is provided on one edge with a hook 2 which may be used to open caps of bottles. One end of the. body portion is rounded as shown at 3.
On one side, there is astraight edge 4 against which a hinged cutter blade 5 bears portion 7 arranged to receive the loop, and is when the device is in operating position. The body portion has an extension 6 which is bent into the form of a loop or hinge portion. The cutter blade 5 has a cut away provided with inwardly extending inte ral pintle portions 9. around which the hinge portion 6 is bent. The cutter blade 5 has a sharp point 10 and a curved cutting edge 11. The body portion 1 has a recess 12 of the shape shown in the drawings. This provides a sharp fulcrum point 16.
A guard 13 consisting of a single piece of metal bent back upon itself as shown at 14 is pivotally hinged to the end of the body portion by means of an eyelet 15.
From the foregoing description of the various parts ofv the device the operation thereof ma y be readily un erstood. Normally the device is closed as shown in Figures 2 and 3. In these figures, it will. be seen that the portion 14 overlies the end of the blade 5 when the latter is swung in a position adjacent to the body portion, so as to cover the point 10. The device cariybe carried 1n the pocket without any danger of cutting the clothing or person of the owner. When it is desired to use the-knife for opening cans, the guard 13 is thrown back and the blade 5 is opened until it is at right angles to the body portion 1, when the edges 5 will engage the edge of the body portion so as to prevent the movement of the blade past a position perpendicular to the plane of the body portion.
The point 10 is applied to the top of the can inside of the bead, and the fulcrum point 16 is brought underneath the bead on the outside thereof, the guard first being swung into closed position. Now, by ress- I ing downwardly with the thumb, as s own in Figure 4, the cutter will be forced downwardly to out the can, the device swinging about the points 16 as a fulcrum. By raising the cutter and shifting the .fulcrum 100 I point toward the body, i. e. toward'the right in Figure 4, the out can be continued all around the can. The device is simple in construction, and
therefore is not liable to easily get out of- 105 order. It is compact and when not in use can be carried in the'pocket without any inconvenience.
After use the blade is folded and the guard is swung into position over it. The can 110 Q memes opener may be carried in the pocket or it a recess to permit the entrance of a portion may be suspended from a key chain, and of the can, and bein provided with a fulthe e elet forms a means for suspension. erum point on the e to which the blade 15 I c aim: is hinged, and a guard hinged to said body 5 A can opener com nsmg a flat body porportion and-havin a part bent back upon tion, a blade hinges at one edge of said itself, said bent bae portion bein arranged bod portion and arranged to swing at ri ht to envelo a portion of the bod? and the ang es thereto, aportion of said blade bemg pointed e of the blade adjacent thereto, II arranged to enga the edge of the body thereby be ding the blade in its folded posi- 10 rtion so as to imit its movement, said tion.
