To all whom-it may concern:

Be it known that I, KNUD F. Scmomenu, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Can Opener, of which, the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in can openers, especially those which are designed to be carried in the pocket, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed. 1

An object of m invention is to provide a can opener in w oh the cutting blade is' foldable with a guard for holding the blade in its folded position so that it may be carried in the pocket without any danger of cutting the latter, or of injuring the owner.

A further object of my invention is to provide a simple folding can opener which may be folded into small compass so as to take up very little room, and which may be used by. campers, tourists, or the like.

A further object of my invention is to v provide a device which can be made up at small cost since it is entirely stamped out.-

In carrying out my invention I provide a body portion 1 which consists of merely a flat metal plate. It is provided on one edge with a hook 2 which may be used to open caps of bottles. One end of the. body portion is rounded as shown at 3.

On one side, there is astraight edge 4 against which a hinged cutter blade 5 bears portion 7 arranged to receive the loop, and is when the device is in operating position. The body portion has an extension 6 which is bent into the form of a loop or hinge portion. The cutter blade 5 has a cut away provided with inwardly extending inte ral pintle portions 9. around which the hinge portion 6 is bent. The cutter blade 5 has a sharp point 10 and a curved cutting edge 11. The body portion 1 has a recess 12 of the shape shown in the drawings. This provides a sharp fulcrum point 16.

A guard 13 consisting of a single piece of metal bent back upon itself as shown at 14 is pivotally hinged to the end of the body portion by means of an eyelet 15.

From the foregoing description of the various parts ofv the device the operation thereof ma y be readily un erstood. Normally the device is closed as shown in Figures 2 and 3. In these figures, it will. be seen that the portion 14 overlies the end of the blade 5 when the latter is swung in a position adjacent to the body portion, so as to cover the point 10. The device cariybe carried 1n the pocket without any danger of cutting the clothing or person of the owner. When it is desired to use the-knife for opening cans, the guard 13 is thrown back and the blade 5 is opened until it is at right angles to the body portion 1, when the edges 5 will engage the edge of the body portion so as to prevent the movement of the blade past a position perpendicular to the plane of the body portion.

The point 10 is applied to the top of the can inside of the bead, and the fulcrum point 16 is brought underneath the bead on the outside thereof, the guard first being swung into closed position.
