COMBINATION POWDER BOX COVER AND POWDER PUFF RETAINER Filed Nov. 12, 1927 M INVENTOR. /LL/AN M. BENDER.
I TTORNEY Patented June 4, 1929.
UNITED STATES LILLIAN M. BENDER, OF'SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION POWDER-BOX COVER AND POWDER-PUFF RETAINER.
Application le. November 12, 1927. Serial No. 232,830.
The present invention relates to improvements in a combination powder-box cover and powder-puff retainer, and with reference more particularly to those covers adapted to carry interiorly provisions for retaining in convenient relation the usual Ipowder-puff, or pads intended for the application of face powders.
The present practices of lpermitting the powder-puff to lie assembled when not in use with the various otherl toilet articles upon the dresser, to their empowolered untidiness; or of placing it within the box withv the powder to become completely covered therewith, necessitating a thorough dusting-out with consequent loss of powder, to again fit it for use; or of increasing the number of articles constituting the toilet set, bythe addition of another and separate receptacle for its retention, are all equally unsatisfactory on the score of cleanliness, tidiness and economy.
A primary object of my present inventionv is the provision of a neat, attractive and conveniently arranged means for retaining powder-puffs when not in use, borne interiorly the box-cover and, preferably, constituting an integral part thereof.
lVhile the preferred construction, as indicated, for the cover is of two-piece, top and bottom in spaced relation with a section of the latter removed for placement and withdrawal of the powder-pui it is obvious that this bottom may be of separate construction and adapted for displacement and replacement, without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, formingl a part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference refer to like parts, throughout:
Figure l is a plany view of a form of cover with a section broken away exposing the powderpuff and its retainer, the which retainer may be any one of different designs.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View on line 2 2 of Figure l, showing the interior and the arrangement of the various parts relative to each other; l y
Figure 3 is a view of a detached disc, or power-puff retainer, per se, of any material possessing resiliency to a degree sufficient to cause it to retain its position through this quality; and
Figure 4 is a modified form, in which the powder-puff Vretainer is shown as part of the cover.
Constructionallyconsidered` as a whole, the design for boX, cover, and powder-putt1 retainer may be anything possessed of artistic merit, and the material of a quality governed only by its cost and adaptability. For the more reasonably priced constructions, celluloid is to be preferred, both on account of ease of working and the artistry afforded by the material.
Obviously, the position shown for the powder-puff retainer is the more convenient one, though not necessarily the only one, as somewhat similar provisions may be made for its being borne as an integral part of the boX bottom proper, nor is it an absolutely necessary requirement that the powder-puff 'retainer be fashioned for the reception of the powder-puff as herein provided for, since the body of the cover proper might be so apertured as to be made to serve this purpose. l
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates in a general Way the boX as a Whole, 6 the cover' for the boX, 7 the flange borne by the cover and adapted to be accommodated by the open end ofthe box, 8 the boX per se, 9 the powder-puff retaining member of resilient material and any design adapted to receive and retain a powder-puff, l0 the curved cut-out of the retainer adapted for the reception of the powder-puff, l1 the powder-puff resting upon the puff retainer, and 12 the pocket-like concavity borne by the powder-puff retainer and adapted for the accommodation of the powder-puff.
In the modification, Figure 4, in which 5 indicates the box as a Whole, and 8 the box per se, the cover 6, the flange 7 and the powder-puff retainer 9 are represented as an integral unit constituting the cover proper, with 10 and 12 the cut-out and concavity, respectively, of the powder-puff retainer 9.
While the cover 6 may be a plane surface, it is prefererd that it be slightly domed, to afford increased space between cover andV powder-puff retainer, without increasing unduly the concavity of the latter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination With a powder-box and its cover, of a lunette-shaped member an integral llO of' resilient character adapted to fit within said cover in spaced relation therewith and to be thus sustained through its resiliency 'and serve as a retainer for a powder-puff.
2. The combination .with a powder-box and its cover, of a member of resilient character with a section removed' providing an opening fitted to the interior of said cover and adapted to be held in spaced relation therewith and to serve as a retainer for a powder-puff. v
3. The combination with a powder-box, of a dome-shaped cover therefor, an invert dome-shaped member with a section removed to provide an opening and of resilient character fitted tothe interior of said cover and adapted to be held in spaced relation therewith through its resiliency and to serve as a retainer for a powder-puff.
14. The combination with a powder-box having a slightly dome-shaped cover, of a lunette-shaped powder-puff retainer fitted tc be received by the interior of said cover and to be sustained in spaced relation therewith.
5. A powder-box cover adapted to serve as a powder-puff retainer, comprising an upper dome-like section' and'a lower lunettelike section integrally united in spaced relation.
6.'In a powder-boxs cover construction, a pair of similar concave members integrally united with their concavities facing each other to form a receptacle therebetweeman elongated circular opening of lunette character borne by one of said members to Vpermit access to said receptacle, said receptacle being adapted to serve as a powder-puff retainer, and a fianged member circumferentially borne by said concave members and adapted to be accommodated by the open end of saidpowder-box.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed iny signature this November, 1927.
LILLLANV M. BENDER.
