UNITED STATES PATENT OFFiCs. g
ALFRED F. REILLY, or ATTLnnO'i-io7A MASSACHUSETTS, Assienon To EVANS CASE COMPANY, OF NORTH ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- CHUSETTS.
COMPACT.
Application filed November 12, 1927. Serial No. 232,896." l
This invention relates to improvenients'in toilet accessories and morey particularly to a inexpensive construction, in which the powder is retained in place by a sitter disl-z which normally holds the powder in position, but which when tapped lightly, flwill permit a small amount' of powder to disfrictionally engages the wall of Athe `conipartment in which the powder is placed, so
ythat any movement of the powder past the edge of the disk is prevented.
v Another object otl the invention is to provide a compact Oti'elatively slight thickness, and one in which the powder is preventedfrom working out of its coinpart' p ment by a packing` ring combined with a sifter dislr. i
With the foregoing,r objectsiout-lined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, iny invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accomN panying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appenifled claims.
Referring,l to the drawing,
Fig. l is a diainetrical vertical sectional view of my improved compact.
Fig. 2 is a. horizontal sectional view, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bezel ring shown detached from the casing.
As shown in the drawing, the casing of my improved compact is quite shallow', and consists of a circular ooiicaved bottom l, provided at its edge with an inwardly extending convexed ring 2, provided at its free edge with a downwardly extending annular cylindrical flange 3.
This casing' iscombined with a convex cover Ll, which is hinged to the casing` at 5, and may have its free end connected to the 'casing by any suitable fastening means Detachably mountedin the casing, is a bezel ring` o, which is split at 7, and is provided at itslower edge with an inwardly eX- ten'ding annular flange 8 which more or less snugly enga-ges the upper surface ofthe bottom l. n
Anoutwaidly extendiing` annular vflange 9 is provided. at the upper edge of the bezel ring, and is adapted to move beneath the llange 3, when the ring 6 is expanded into position. The ilanpges and-9 also engage each other more or less snuglyto aid in preventingl the powder from working outlietween these flanges. f 'Before the bezel ring is placed'in the casing, a ring` l() of raw cotton or `the like is y fitted into the casing between its bottom and Charge on to the disk. The edge oi the disk Iworkits way under the flange 8.
'lhe bezel'ring is formed of resilient metal, and due to this resiliency, the' ends of the ring tend to overlap `when the ring is not held in a position Vvin which its ends abut, as
`at the point y7", land this -resiliency of the ring is'madeuse of` toi'etain a sifter diskll,
Vin any position to which ithas Vbeen moved bythe operator. f
`This sitter disk is preferably formed of a sheet metal stamping, and its edge frictionally engages the` inner surface of the bezel ring; G. The central portion of the sitter disk is depressed to forni a cavity l2, into which powder may settle after passing through apertures 13 in the side wall ot the concavity of the disk. The powder is shown at 14.
After the partshave been iiianufactured, and the casing' has been provided with its cover t, the parts are assembled by liist placing` 'the packing,` ring;l l0 in the casing;` then` inserting the bezel ring, and finally inserting` the sifter disk. llfheii the sitter disl: is pressed into position, it causes the bezel ring to expand to the point where its ends come together in abutting relation, and at this time, the frictional engagement between the vbezel ring and the sifter dislris suoli that the sitter disk will be held in any position to which it has been inoved by the operator.
vWhen it is desired to` put powder in the lOl) y ring.` i
l casing, l inserting any pointed tool in one of the the be readily holes of the disk, and, tlien moving the tool 'nia ein; through are opening fa nl@ Q -aging. After tlie powder 14 llas been placedin tlie casing, the disk is replaced, and a. suliieient space in left above tlie disk to receive apov'- der puff or the likey From tlie `foregoing, it believed tliattlie construction, Eoperation and advantages of tlie invention may be readily understood and l d I aniaivare that cliangesniay be niade in tlie details disclosed Without departing `rointhe *spirit ol' the invention, as expressed in tlie claims. i i
Wliat I claim and desire to secure ley-Letters Patent is: Y
l'. A `coinpact coniipiising a casing, a bezel ring in the casing, packing surrounding said ring, and ajsii'ftei disk in the casingvliaving its `'edge riet'ionally engaging said bezel y 2.
