DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed October 17, 1927.
This invention relates to door fasteners, and its general object is to provide a lock for a swinging door, that locks the door in either an open or closed position and retains the same accordingly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door lock that is key actuated and must be'opened by a key from the outside but is capable of being operated from the inside without the key.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character above set forth, that is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation and service. i
This invention also consists in certain'other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation taken through a door and its frame, and showing the locking device in applied and locked position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the door open.

Figure 6 is a detail edge elevation of the key actuated parts and plate carrying the same. 7 Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be noted that I have illustrated my locking device associated with a door mounted for' movement in a horizontal plane but I want it understood that the device can be associated with any type door and frame therefor capable of receiving the same, without departing from the spirit of the invention. The letter A indicates the door frame which is provided with the usual face B and hingedly secured Serial 7 No. 226,700.

The locking device is fixed to the frame and door respectively and includes a substantially Ushaped bracket 1 terminating at its ends in apertured ears receiving screws 2 for securing the same to the underside of the top of the frame as best shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Pivotally secured midway the ends of the bracket 1 is one end of an elongated link 3 which pivotally receives at its opposite end a link 4. The link 3 is pivoted adjacent one end of the link 4 and this end has rising therefrom a projection 5 which acts as a stop and engages the link 3 upon one edge thereof as best shown in Figure 4 in order to limit the pivotal movement of the links with respect to 7 each other as well as thermovement of the door in its open position as will be readily apparent.
Secured to the door adjacent its free end and in alignment with the bracket 1 is a bearing bracket 6 having a portion 7 bent at right angles upon itself to be disposedin a horizontal plane for pivotally receiving the adjacent end of the link'4. Pivotally secured to the underside of the link 4 adjacent its end pivoted to the portion 7 is a latch member 8 extending at right angles to the link 4 and terminating at its outer end in a keeper hook 9 which is provided with an opening 10.
The bearing bracket has cut therefrom and extending at an angle from its fixed end portion as best shown in Figure 4, a tongue 11 which receives one of the ends of a coil spring 12 while the opposite end is secured in an opening 13 formed in the latch member 8. Thespring urges the parts to their respective positions as will be apparent, and when the links are manually moved upon movement of the door from their positions as shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, the spring will exert its tension for further moving the parts accordingly.
Arranged in the path of the notch 14 of the keeper hook 9 is a stud 15 depending from the link 3. The stud is adapted to be received in the notch 14 when the door is disposed in closed position for retaining the latter in said position as will be apparent.
Secured to the door and to the upper reinforcing strip thereof is a bracket 16 having a free portion bent upon itself to form spaced ears 1'? between which is journaled a pulley 18.
The door has arm nged and secured thereto adjacent its free edge and in convenient reach of a person, the key actuated mechanism of the locking device, which includes a plate 19 fixed to said door and having formed'therewith a sleeve 20 extending be yond opposite sides of said plate with a portion passing through the door as best shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. Mounted for rotation in said sleeve is the shank 21 of an arm 22 which is provided with an opening 23. Out from the plate-19 and curved upon itself forengagement with the arm 22 is a tongue 24 which engages the arm 22 and re tains the shank 21 in operative position in the sleeve. The free end of the shank 21 ter- -minates inwardly of the outer end of the sleeve 20 and is formed square in cross section to receive a square in cross section socket formed in the key 25 which is adapted torotate the shank and its arm accordingly.
Trained in the pulley 18 and having its respective ends secured to hooks 26 and 27 passing through and secured in the openings 10 and 23 is a flexible element 28. The flexible elementv as shown is a chain, but of .courseit can be a rope or other similar element. 3
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided atdoor locking device which will lock the door in either its open or closed position, and for the purpose of illustrating the operation of the device, assuming that the door is locked, in its closed position, as shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, the key 25 is arranged in the sleeve 20 to receive the shank 21, and upon rotating the arm 22 through the medium of its shank, a V
pull is exerted upon the flexible element 28 which moves the keeper hook on its pivot out of engagement with the stud 15 so as to allow the door to be opened. When the door is arranged to position whereby the links 3 and et'are disposed beyond their pivot center, the spring 12 will forcegthe door to its full open position with the projection 5 of the link 4' in contacting engagement with the link 3 as best shown in Figure l, IV hen the links are in this position, they will retain the door in its open position, and it is necessa-ry that the pivot of the links be broken before the door can be closed, with the result the arm must again be moved for moving the flexible element accordingly, and this movement will break the links and allow the door to be closed.
The door can be operated-from either of its positions from the interior thereof, by
merely pulling upon the chain 28 or moving the arm 22 as will be apparent.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall withinthe scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is: o
1. A look of the character described comprising a bracket adapted to be fixed to the frame of a door, a bracket fixed to the door, pivotally secured links pivotally secured to their respective brackets, a latch member pivotally secured to one of said links, a keeper hook formed with said latch member, a projection depending from the other link and arranged in the path of the keeper hook, resilient means between one of said brackets and the latch member, flexible means for operating the latch member and key actuated means connected to said flexible memberand associated with said door.
2. A look for swinging doors comprising a pair of brackets, pivoted links pivotally secured to said brackets, a pivoted latch member carried by one of said links, and means for operating said latch member and including a flexible member having one end secured thereto, a key actuated means secured to the opposite end and carried by a door.
3. .A look of the character described comprising brackets, pivoted links secured to said bracket-s, a projection depending from one of said links, a pivoted latch member secured to the other of said links and adapted to receive said projection, resilient means between one of said brackets and the pivoted latch member, a projection formed with the latch member carrying link and being engageable with the other link, means for moving the latch member on its pivot and including a flexiblemember, a pulley for the flexible member, a sleeve, a square in cross section shank arranged in saidsleeve and adapted to receive a key for rotating said shank, an arm formed with said shank, and a hook secured to said arm and receiving the flexible "element.
LA lock for swinging doors comprising a bracket secured to the frame of a door, a second bracket secured to the door, links pivotally secured to each other and to the brackets respectively, a pivoted latch member secured to one of said links, a keeper hook included in said pivoted latch member, a spring having its ends secured to one of said brackets and'the pivoted latch member respectively, a projection depending from one of said links and arranged in the path of the pivoted latch member for receiving the keeper hook thereof, and key actuated means for controlling the movement of the pivoted latch member against the tension of its spring for operating the latch member and the links as and for the purpose specified.
5. A door lock of the character described comprising a bracket secured to the frame of a door, a bracket secured to the door, an aper-v tured portion formed with the last mentioned bracket, pivoted links secured to the bracket first mentioned and apertured portion respectively, a tongue formed with the second mentioned bracket, a pivoted latch member secured to one of said links, a coil spring having its ends secured to the pivoted latch member and tongue respectively, a pulley carried by said door, a chain trained about said pulley and having one end connected with said pivoted latch member, key actuated means for operating said chain, and projections extending from said links as and for the'purpose specified.
6. A door lock of the character described comprising a bracket secured to the frame of a door, a bracket secured to the door, pivoted links pivotally secured to said brackets, a projection carried by one of said links and arranged for engagement with the other link, a projection depending from the last, mentioned link, a pivoted latch member carried by the link secured to the bracket on the door, resilient means between the pivoted latch member and last mentioned bracket, a pulley carried by said door, a plate secured to said door, a sleeve formed with said plate and passing through the door, an arm, a shank formed with said arm and extending into said sleeve, said shank being adapted to receive a key for operating the same, a hook for the pivoted latch member and arm respectively, and a chain trained about said pulley and having its ends secured to the hooks.
7 A lock fol-retaining a door in a closed or open position and comprising brackets, pivoted links pivotally secured to said brackets, a latch member secured to one of said links, a stud depending from the other of said links and arranged in the path of the latch member, spring means for said latch member, key actuated means for operating said latch member, and a projection formed with the latch carrying link and engageable with the other of said links.
