IMPROVEMENT IN BOB-.SLEDS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 171,271, dated December 21 1875; application filed May 15, 1875. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS DILLON, of
New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bob-Sled Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my device, and Fig. 2 is a plan "iew of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4; is a detail "iew.
My invention relates to bob-sleds; and it as hereinafter described, which are designed to prevent strain or breakage when moving over rough or uneven surfaces.
The letter A of the drawings represents my rear sled, which is, preferably, connected with the front sled by means of the tongue B, at-' tached to the reach 0, as shown; I) representsan arched and flanged plate, which is secured by bolts or otherwise'to the top of each of the sled-runners. This plate may be constructed either of wood or metal, and its office is to serve as a track and guide for the rollers hereinafter mentioned, and the movable bolster to which said rollers are attached. The plate D is constructed with a swelled or circular-shaped track, a, for the rollers, as shown on Fig. 4 of the drawings, the respective ends of which are curved upward, as
a flange, curved upwardly on the outside of the plate, the line of curvature correspondingwiththe plane of the track forthe rollers above described. H represents an axle, formrear sled, to which the axle H and roller G v are attached, as shown on Fig. 3. One of these axles and rollers is connected with each end of the bolster, and a flanged and curved plate is attached to each runner of the sled.
I am aware that a sled has heretofore been constructed in which the bolster is connected with the way by means of a rounded bearing fitting into adepression, for the purpose of allowing an oscillating movement of the hob, and employing frictionrrollers to obviate the friction in the end movement of the b'ob, as shown in Letters Patent granted to J. Stevens,
dated January 10, 1865, No. 45,874; and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In bob-sleds, the plate D, having curved track a, and flange a, both curved upward correspondingly with the plane of the track, in
combination with the axle H, forming a bearing for the roller G, and provided with a rectangular hook, c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
