To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. PoINDEX- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sleds, particularly with reference to improved crooks for attachment to the front ends of the runners of mud boats, logging sleds, and sleds used for other purposes, and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of metal crook adapted to be secured to the front end of a sled runner and provide means for the attachment of the hitch beam, which metal crook will render it unnecessary to upturn the front end of a sled runner as is usually done, and will enable the sled runner to be made of a straight piece of wood having parallel sides, thereby very greatly reducing the cost of the sled runner both as to the quantity of the material required to produce the same, and also as to the labor involved in its construction.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sled embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the front end of the runner, showing one of my improved crooks secured thereto, and also showing the hitch beam secured to the front end of the crook, Fig. 3 is a detail top plan'view of the crock, Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line oa of Fig. 2, and showing the corrugations in the underside of the crook.
In accordance with my invention I provide crooks 1 to be secured to the front ends of sled runners 2. Such sled runners may be made of straight pieces of wood having parallel sides. The front ends of the runners are partly rounded on their undersides, as at 3, and on the upper sides of the front ends of the runners the rear ends 4 of my improved crooks are placed and the same are secured to the runners by means of bolts 5, the heads of which are preferably countersunk in the undersides of the runners, as shown 1n Flg. 2.
My improved. crooks are made of metal of portion 7 and is provided at its underside at its rear end with a recess 8 for the reception of the front upper portion of the runner, said recess providing a shoulder 9 to bear against the narrowed extreme front end of the runner. The extreme front end of each crook is bent slightly-downwardly, as at 10, and at the angle required by the line of draft. The hitch-beam 11, which has the usual clevis 12 is bolted on the front ends of the arms 6 of the crooks. To strengthen the construction of the crooks, and at the same time eflect an economy of material, I corrugate the lower sides of the arms 6 of the crooks, as at The sled may be of any suitable construction. For the purposes of this specification knees 14 are shown secured on the upper sides of the runners and extending u wardly therefrom. Bolsters 15 are securec on the said knees and are provided at their ends with clip irons 1.6, for the reception of the lower ends of the standards 17.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
A straight sled runner having a metal crook on its upper side at its front end, said metal crook having its rear portion provided with a recess in its under side to receive the front upper corner of the runner and providing a shoulder to bear against the front end of the runner, and fastening means connecting the runner and the rear portion of the crook together, the under side of the crook in advance of the runner being longitudinally corrugated, substantially as described.
