IMPROVEMENT IN THILLS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,558, dated November 11, 1873; application tiled October 6, 1873. i
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW MUHLEISEN, of Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thills or Shafts for Car riages, Wagons, 8vo., ofwhich the following is a speciiication:
This invention has for its Object the production of shafts or thills for vehicles, the form and arrangement imparted to such being that when the same are connected with the front axle of a vehicle the position of the draft-animal will be such as not to be compelled to travel upon the ridge created between the beaten tracks by the continued passage of double teams, but said animal will be permitted to travel in one of the beaten tracks without necessitating the wheels of the vehicle to leave the track made by the wheels of the double teams. My invention consists in forming one thill together with the cross-bar in a single piece, the end of the cross-bar being connected with the other thill at a point so as to leave a projecting rear end, while a similar rear end or arm is united with the shaft formed with the cross-bar, the object of such being to admit of the shaft-irons being bolted thereon for the purpose of connecting the shafts with the axle or thill-coupling of the carriage or wagon. My invention further consists in providing the thills with a 1aterallyproj ecting arm having suitable means for connecting it with the axle, in such a manner as to strengthen the shafts and counteract any lateral strain exerted upon the shafts, and further, to secure an equal draft at both ends of the front axle, thus causing the carriage or wagon to travel in a straight line with respect to the draft animal.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a top or plan view of my thills. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the shaft-irons.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the thill,.and B the cross-bar for connecting with the opposite thill or shaft C. The shaft A and cross-bar B are bent or formed of a single piece from suitably-seasoned wood, by steaming and bending the same in the usual manner of bending wood. The shaft or thill C is of the usual construction and is connected I prefer to construct the lateral arm D in a single piece with the shaft-iron E, as shown in Fig. 2, which shaft-iron possesses an extension, a, and arm b, for strengthening the point of union between the thill O and cross-bar, and the arm b of which passes along beneath the thill O and serves as a means of connect ing the same with the axle. A
The point of union between the thill A and arm F is strengthened by the shaft-iron G, which possesses two branching arms, c d, corresponding to the shape of the thill A and cross-bar B, and an arm, c, which passes be neath the arm F, and serves as a means of connecting the thill A with the axle.
By the construction above described I produce thills for vehicles which permit the draft animal to travel in one of the beaten tracks made by the continued passage of double teams, and which also permits the wheels of the carriage or wagon to pass in the track made by the wheels of the double team. V
All lateral strain on the front axle, which would follow to a slight degree the construction and arrangement of my shafts, is
counteracted by the laterallyprojectmg arm D attached to the axle of the vehicle, and au equal draft of both ends of the front axle is secured, thus causing the vehicle to travel in a straight line with respect to the draft animal.
The curved cross-bar B may be furnished with the usual devices for attaching the whifetree, which whiffletree I prefer to make of a form corresponding to that of the curved cross-bar.
I claim as my invention- 1. The side thill A, having the curved crossbau' B and an arm, F, in combination with In testimony tht I claim the foregoing I the side thill C, adapted to receive shaft-ironsr have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of E, substantially as shown and described, for September, 1873. the purpose specified. ANDREW MUHLEISEN.
2. The shaft-iron E, having the chill-arm b, extension o, and iatemily-equalizing erm Witnesses: D, substantially as described, for the purpose J. H. UPHAUs,
speced. DAVID HALKER.
