This invention relates to a method of assembling valve mechanism within apassage in a lubricant feeding nipple, and to a tool for assembling the same.
An object of my invention is to provide a tool which during a single operation will advance a coil spring into the passage in a lubricant feeding nipple, and broach the in ner wall of the nipple to provide lugs for re- '10 taining the spring therein.
iAnother object of my invention is to provide a tool having broaching teeth and a coil spring retaining seat, or pilot.
Another object of my'invention resides in providing a tool having broaching teeth, and means beyond the ends of the teeth for engaging atcoil spring, said means having clearances thereln in alignment with the broaching teeth. a

The nipple 13 has a reduced inlet end 14 and an outlet end 15, and a passage extends therethrough consisting of a chamber 16, and passages 17 and 18 of decreased diameters. The nipple is also provided with hexagonal sides 19, and when inserted into the recess 12 of the same shape, secured within the plate for the purpose hereinafter 'set forth.
The holder 11 is arranged so that it can becentered directly above the nipple, and is provided with a recess 20 into which one end of-the shank 21, of the broachi-ng tool 22 is removably secured. A set screw '23 extends through an aperture in the wall of the holderalllld lengages a flattened portion 24 on the s an r.
The outer end of the shank is 'providedlands are formed as broaching teeth 27 which are provided with inwardly extending rakes A pilot 29 extends from the end of the Ly greater than the diameter of the shank taken atthe central point of the clearances 25 adjacent which the ribs extend. The ribs 31 are provided near their'outer ends with inwardly extending shoulders 35 which provide a seat which will engage the circular end of a coil spring 34 as shown in Fig 1.-

What I claim is 1. A method of assembling valve 'mecha; nism within a passage through a lubricant reend of the passage in the nipple, inserting a coil spring for engaging the closure member into the. outlet end of the passage in the nipple, compressing said' spring, breaching lugs from the wall of the nipple and concurrently increasing the compression of said spring so that the upper end thereof is maintained a predetermined distance from the fixed ends of the lugs, and then releasing said spring to permit the upper end thereof to rest on said lu s.
