fiATES uai'i' PATENT QFFICE.
MATI-IILDA TRAEG-ER, OF UNION CITY, NEW JERSEY.
, COMB.
Application filed February 15, 1928. Serial No. 254,350.
I have invented an improvement in combs; particularly combs for human hair, and of such a design that the improved comb can conveniently be carried about on the person.
It is an object of the invention to provide a portable comb of convenient size having integral means which does not add in any way to the size of the comb and which enables the comb to be secured in the owners pocket.
The nature and scope of the invention will be clearly set forth in the following description taken with the drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my invention. But the disclosure is explanatory only and I may make changes in the l Ollll, proportions and other minor details without departing from the principle of the invention.
On the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top view of a comb according to my invention, and
Figure 2 is aside view thereof.
The same numerals identifyjthe same parts throughout.
The body of the comb is shown at 1 and it can be made of hard rubber, celluloid or any other suitable material. It is provided with teeth 2 which may be all of the same or of different sizes; and the comb will be of just the right length and width for carrying about in the pocket of the coat or vest of the owner. To hold the comb in the pocket and prevent it from falling out. 1 form the comb so that it has a catch or clip 3. This catch is integral with the back or body of the comb 1 and disposed adjacent one end. It can be shaped by stamping or molding it so that it has, for the most part the shape of a tongue in a recess or slot 4. This catch curves so as to extend away from the face of the comb in the middle of the length of the catch or clip and is bent or curved adjacent its free end so that it re-enters the slot 4:, but the end is turned outward and projects slightly from the surface of the adjacent side of the comb as indicated at 5. This construction enables the comb to be slipped into the pocket and the edge of the pocket to pass beneath the extremity 5 so as to force the clip outward. The
' cloth at the edge oi the owners pocket is thus gripped by the catch 3 and the comb is held fast. It can be freed and extracted from the pocket simply by pulling on it with enough force to make the clip 3 slide free of the edge at one end of the row of teeth 2 and extends towards the opposite end, being integral with the back 1 and disposed for the most part within theslot l; which to some extent houses this clip, so that it does not project and run the risk of being caught and broken oil. I
also dispose this clip adjacent the larger. or
coarser teeth 2; because, when the comb is disposedin the pocket and secured by the clip,
the larger teeth are not so liable to be broken when caught. on the rim of the owners pocket it the comb is carelessly handled, as the smaller or finer teeth would be. i
The invention is thus seen to be very simple and useful, and the comb as thus constructed takes up very'little room andcan be held in the pocket securely enough to prevent loss. 7
I claim: Y,
1. A pocket comb having a body and'a row of teeth extending along'the body; the row of teeth and the body being practically of the same length, the ends of the body being rounded and forming the ends of the row of teeth, and an integral clip carried by the comb beginning at one end and extending along said row of teeth towards the opposite end, said clip being formed by cutting the body of the comb so as to leave a slot therein, the clip being curved between its ends to extend away from the slot on one face of the comb and then back into the slot with its free end bent to project out of the slot.
' 2. A pocket comb according to claim 1 wherein the row of teeth comprises relatively coarse teeth at one end and relatively fine teeth at the other with the coarse teeth arranged adjacent the clip.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereto.
MATHILDA TRAEGER.
