IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,081, dated November 16, 1875; application filed October 21, 1875.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIMEON GUTMANN, of New York city, county, and State, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bosom-Shirts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, describing a double-bosom shirt, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

The object of my invention is to provide two bosoms in one shirt, either one of which may be made to appear as the bosom of theshirt by being lapped over, sons to lie in front of the other. I accomplish this object by making, and the invention consists in, a shirt-body, made in the usual manner, open front and back, or either, neck-band and all complete, to which is secured at each side, where the single bosom is usually attached to the body, and the upper half or two-thirds of it, an independent bosom on each side, this bosom being without neck-band, its free upper and outer end secured by a button in any ordinary way, or not, at will, and also free. and unattached at the bottom and part of the side, preferably but it may have one or more tags at bottom, middle, or end, to assist in keeping it down, if desired.

' The shirt thus constructed has a single neck-band, N, in the usual manner, to be secured by buttons or studs. The body B may be made open at the back and closed in front, as usual, or vice versa 5 but I prefer it open front and back, for the reason that, so made, it will fit men of different sizes equally well. The bosom, being independent, is the same in set and appearance undisturbed, and without break on them, while the body, thus open, gives room to the body of the wearer, and perfect freedom of motion to the shoulders backward and forward, and ease to the wearer,

without danger of tearing the material, even if deficient, and insufficient to cover the whole body. The two bosoms A and A may be the same in color, design, and plait, or shapeas square, round, curved, oval, or any other shape or different, so as to give the appearance of an entirely different shirt, and for the market collars of corresponding character may be put up with each shirt. Buttons or studs may be used in the bosom, or'any other variety of ornament. The advantages of havin g each bosom free and unattached at bottom and part way on each side upward from the bottom are evident. In all forward and backward motions of the body the line of fiexure must be below the stiff casing of the ribs, and about on a line with the stomachand diaphragm, so that the chief displacement of fleXure is in or at the lower third of the bosom, and, being unattached there, the stiff bosoms may both move considerably up and down, while the limp body B is undisturbed in relation to the body of the wearer. The bosoms A and A may be attached to the body B along the whole side without avoiding my invention in some of its features; but I prefer the unattached bottom for the bosom for the reason stated. The wearer of a bosomshirt so constructed may, in a car or other public place, without offense and with ease, unbutton his cravat, displace either a soiled or undesirable bosom from the front, fold it underneath, as a door is moved on its hinges, while the other bosom is displaced from underneath by an opposite movement, and, after the first bosom has been folded in, it may be, in turn, folded in, across, and over the other, and so concealing the same entirely from sight, while the cravat being replacechthe transformation is complete. When the bosoms so attached are properly laundried, their unrumpled form and fit under all circumstances is complete. It is understood that the shirtbody B extends under both bosoms, and is not cut away between the lines of attachment of the bosoms. The neck parts of the bosoms are out out and sloped on each side, and alike, so as to conform to the neck-band and neck of the shirt, according to size; but each is without any neck-band whatever, and is attached to the body of the shirt, so as to hinge upon the same, as shown and described.

The body of the shirt may be'open in front or closed, and also at the back. The neck-band is secured to the body of the shirt.

I claim as my invention 1. The bqsoms A and A formed and constructed as described and shown, in combination with the shirt-body B, provided with a neck-band, and attached to the said shirt-body at each side, as set forth.

2. The bosoms A and A, formed and constructed as described and shown, in combination with the shirt-body B, provided with a neck-band, and attached to the said shirt-body at each side of the same on the upper part only, and left free and unattached at the bottom, as specified and set forth.
