PERMANENT-WAVE COMB.
Application filed February 20, 1928. Serial No. 255,855.
This invention relates to combs, and more especially an improved comb adapted for use in making permanent waves.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a comb having an auxiliary member or single tooth, to be spaced from the regular succession of teeth on the comb and from one end tooth of the comb, permitting the ladies hair to be divided into even or uneven parts, which is sesential in permanent waving.
it is well known in permanent waving that sometimes it is necessary to vary the sections of hair when divided, in order to procure the desired and best results in permanent waving, and the idea of varying the sections of hair is due to the fact that some heads of hair are heavier and coarser than others, therefore making it necessary, where the hair is relatively thin, to increase the size of the sections of hair and where the hair is coarse or heavy or medium, to decrease the sections, in order to secure the best results, according to the quantity and quality of the head of hair.
In view of this it is further necessary to make the auxiliary member or single tooth adjustable length-wise on the back of the comb, for the purpose of varying the space between the member and the regular succession of teeth and the end. tooth on the comb, hence permitting the attendant using the comb to vary the size of sections of hair in permanent waving. This character of comb with its single auxiliary member or tooth, spaced as above indicated, enables an operator to effectively use the comb to separate the hair into squares.
it is to be understood that the particulars herein given are to be in no way limited, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1-is a view in perspective of the improved comb constructed in accordance of the invention, showing the single auxiliary member or tooth, the latter being capable of adjustment.
Figure 2is a view of a modified form, wherein one side of the slide is open, allowing the auxiliary member or single tooth to be attached to the comb easier than with the construction shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3is another modified. construc- It will be noted that the comb has a sub-,
stantial space 5 provided between the sections of teeth 3 and i, said space being adjacent one end of the comb.
As shown in Figure 4; a single auxiliary member or tooth 6 is made a permanent part of the back of the comb and is spaced from the regular succession of teeth and from one end tooth of the comb, the single tooth being substantially intermediate such point thereby dividing said space 5 into two spaces, these spaces being used for dividing a head of hair into sections, such sections being necessary in order to produce the desired permanent wave.
As shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive the single auxiliary member or tooth 7 is adjustable. This adjustability may be accomplished in different ways. As in Figure 1 it is accomplished by mounting the auxiliary member or tooth on a slide 8 which has an opening 9 receiving the back of the comb, there being a thumb screw 9 threaded through the top of the sleeve to bite on the back of the comb to holdthe sleeve in different positions.
In Figure 2 a slide 11 is provided but one of its sides is open to allow the slide to be more easily engaged with the back of the comb than with the slide shown in Figure 1.
In Figure 3 the backof the comb has a 1ongitudinal slot 12, and the single auxiliary member or tooth has a reduced shank 13 engaged through the slot, the extremity of the shank having a thumb nut 14; threaded thereon and by which the tooth may be tightened in place, that is the thumb nut engages with the edge of the back of the comb While the shoulder of the tooth engages with the opposite or back of the comb.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed is:
i 1. A comb comprising a back having an end tooth and a regular succession of teeth and provided with a substantial space between the end portion of the regular succession of teeth and the end tooth, and a single tooth carried by the back of the comb and positionedat a point between the ends of the space.
2. As an article of manufacture, a comb comprising a back having a regular succession of teeth disposed a substantial distance from one end of the back, said end of the back hav and a single tooth carried by the back and positioned in saidspace for subdividing the same. a
3. Asian article of manufacture, a comb comprising a back having a regular succession of teeth disposed a substantial distance from one end of the back, said end of the back having a permanent single tooth, there being a substantial space between the permanent end tooth and the regular succession of teeth, and a single tooth carried by the back and positioned in said space for subdividing the same, and means for holding the single subdividing tooth in different positions for varying the spaces on each side of the last named single tooth.
In testimony whereof she afiiXesher signature.
