Application filed May 6,
This invention relates to door latches such as that shown in Patent 782,091 to Whitcomb et al. dated Feb. 7, 1905 and more particularly to an escutcheon for use in connection with said latches.
The object of the invention to provide a construction of this character so constructed that the lugs or ears of the handle in connection with which it is used can operate without requiring a depression to be out in the door.
Another object oi the invention is to so construct an escutcheon of this character that the handle will be raised from the escutcheon and thus permit tie raising of the counter sinks for the screw heads making it unnecessary to counter sink the wood for this purpose.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which may be easily attached and detached relative to the handle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 represents a transverse section through a door with this improved escutchcon shown applied to the latch mechanism in connection with which it is designed to be used, the latch mechanism being shown in dot and dash;
Fig. 2 is a plan view or front elevation of the escutcheon; and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the portion of the latch which is arranged adjacent the escutcheon.
In the embodiment illustrated the latch in connection with which the escutcheon 1O constituting this invention is employed, comprises handles H and H connected by a spindle S with a casing C having a bolt 13 housed therein. All of these parts are old and are shown in the patent above referred to. l
The escutcheon 10 constituting this in 1924:. Serial No. 711,434.
vention is constructed from a substantially oblong metal plate which tapers toward its ends and has said ends bent laterallyoutward at right angles to form guards 11 and 12 designed to be arranged adjacent the handle H and to prevent harness and such like objects from catching under the handle.
This plate 10 has an outstruck circular centrally disposed portion 13 with a central opening 1% formed therein to register with the pint-1e opening in the door. A notch 14 is formed in one edge of the opening for the reception of one of the ears or projections 87 on the inner face of the handle H when the spindle is thrust through the door and engaged with the outer handle.
Formedin the plate 10 between the guards 11 and 12 and the centrally disposed raised portion 13 are two screw receiving apertures 15 and 16' having annular counter sunk seats 17 formed around them to receive the screw heads avoiding the necessity of cutting the door to form countersinks for these heads.
By providing the outstruck raised portion 13 "formed in the escutcheon the handle H will be spaced from the surrounding portion of the plate 10 and thus permit raising of the plate to form the screw head receiving seats 17.
I claim:
An escutcheon plate termed of a length of sheet metal having an opening formed intermediate its ends, the portion of the plate ad jacent to the opening being pressed outwardly and adapted to contact with a handle of a door latch with which thedevice is used, right angled guards formed at the ends of the plate and extending beyond the inner edge of the handle, said plate having opening formed adjacent to the ends thereof, the plate being pressed inwardly and outwardly adjacent to the openings heads of securing screws for securing the plate in position, and the inner edges of the plate at the last mentioned openin s lying in a plane flush with the inner surface of the plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
SAXTON J. MORGAN.
