This invention relates to improvements in handle for remote control.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved handle which is well adapted for use in remote control operating handles and door handles for automobiles and the like, and which is very attractive in appearance and at the same time has the required strength.
Second, to provide a structure having these advantages in which the parts are comparatively simple in the production thereof and easily assembled.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of'the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a remote control handle embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereon on line 22 of Figs. 1 and 3, the grip spindle being shown in full lines.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a somewhat enlarged transverse section on line 44! of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the spindle socket elements.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the handle bar.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my invention as embodied in a remote control handle for operating windows in motor vehicles. It will be understood that my improvements are capable of a very wide variation and adaptation, both in the matter of uses and in design.
In the embodiment illustrated I provide a handle bar I formed as a sheet metal stamping, this handle bar being of channel cross section and the flanges being connected at their forward ends in a curved end portion 2. The web 3 of this handle bar is extended into a flat portion 4 provided with a, spindle socket member opening 5. The spindle socket 'l is arranged through the hole 5 and secured to this extension l by spotwelding at 8. The socket member 9 is welded to the flanged portion of the socket member I as indicated at Ill. This prevents the spindle from being pushed or forced into the socket to such an extent as might fracture the non-metallic casing member II.

be readily molded to the desired shape and configuration and is of channel cross section as shown in Fig. 4, its sides 12 preferably closely embracing the sides of the handle bar. The casing member has flared portions l3 at its inner end which embrace the extension 4 of the handle bar.
The handle bar is provided with holes I4, 15, the hole l5 being in the extension 4. The casing member is provided with rivet-like portions I6 which are engaged in these holes l4 and I5 and upset therein preferably by heat and pressure, the holes being countersunk to receive the upset portions of the members 86. This constitutes an effective means for securing the plastic facing or casing H which is very effectively supported by the metal handle bar. The casing is provided with an annular segmental recess I1 receiving the curved end flange 2 so that the casing is effectively supported at the outer end of the handle.
The grip or finger piece !8 is mounted on the spindle l9 which is inserted through alined opening in the handle bar and the casing, the handle bar having a recess 20 receiving the head 2| of this spindle. It will be noted that the side flanges of the handle bar are tapered outwardly but that there is a segmental surface 22 which is substantially parallel with the web of the handle bar while the casing is provided with a flat end portion 23 which is supported by this edge 22. A washer 24 is arranged between the grip and this flat surface 23.
With this arrangement the stress of operation is mainly sustained by the handle bar. The spindle and grip also serve as means for securing the casing upon the handle bar. While I mention Tenite as a suitable plastic material from which to form the casing portion, it will be understood that there are various plastic materials that may be used and I mentioned Tenite as a material which I have found satisfactory.
Structures embodying my invention may be made in a wide range of design with compara- The plastic portion is effectively supported and, while in the embodiment illustrated the handle bar constitutes the back portion of the handle, it is substantially concealed in use and, of course, it may be finished if desired.
I have illustrated and described my invention in an embodiment which I consider very satisfactory. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various adaptations or embodiments terial such as Tenite, for example, which may which I contemplate as it is believed this disclosure will enable the adaptation of the invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of channel section having spaced flanges joined in a curved end portion and a web portion connecting said flanges, the web portion of said bar connecting said flanges having a flat extension at its inner end provided with a spindle socket receiving opening, said handle bar having spaced holes in its web portion, a socket member secured in said opening in said extension, a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the flanges of said handle bar and the said extension at the inner end of said handle bar, said casing having a segmental recess at its outer end receiving the curved end portion of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with integral rivetlike portions disposed in said hole in said handle bar and upset therein, a grip spindle arranged through said handle bar and casing member at the outer end thereof, and a grip secured to the front end of said spindle, there being a washer disposed between said grip and said casing member and the casing member having a flattened portion constituting a seat for said washer.
2. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of channel section including side flanges and a web portion connecting the same, the web portion of said bar connecting said flanges having a flat extension at its inner end provided with a spindle socket receiving opening, said handle bar having spaced holes in its Web portion, a socket member secured in said opening in said extension, a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the flanges of said handle bar and the said extension at the inner end of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with integral rivet-like portions disposed in said hole in said handle bar and upset therein, a grip spindle arranged through said handle bar and casing member at the outer end thereof, and a grip secured to the front end of said spindle, there being a washer disposed between said grip and said casing member and the casing member having a flattened portion constituting a seat for said washer.
3. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of channel section including side flanges and a web portion connecting the same, the web portion of said bar connecting said flanges having a flat extension at its inner end provided with a spindle socket receiving opening, said handle bar having spaced holes in its web portion, a socket member secured in said opening in said extension, a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the flanges of said handle bar and the said extension at the inner end of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with integral rivet-like portions disposed in said hole in said handle bar and upset therein.
4. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of channel section having spaced flanges joined in a curved end portion and a web portion connecting said flanges, said handle bar having spaced holes in its web portion, a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the flanges of said handle bar and the said extension at the inner end of said handle bar, said casing having a segmental recess at its outer end receiving the curved end portion of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with integral portions disposed in said hole in said handle bar and upset therein, a grip spindle arranged through said handle bar and casing member at the outer end thereof, and a grip secured to the front end of said spindle, there being a washer disposed between said grip and said casing member and the casing member having a flattened portion constituting a seat for said washer.
5. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of channel section having spaced flanges and a web portion connecting the same, said handle bar having spaced holes in its web portion, a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the flanges of said handle bar and the said extension at the inner end of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with integral portions disposed in said hole in said handle bar and upset therein, a grip spindle arranged through said handle bar and easing member at the outer end thereof, and a grip secured to the front end of said spindle, there being a washer disposed between said grip and said casing member and the casing member having a flattened portion constituting a seat for said washer.
6. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of outwardly facing channel section having spaced flanges and a web portion connecting the same, the web portion of the handle bar being extended beyond the flanges thereof and enlarged to constitute a spindle attaching element. the flanges of said bar having a curved connecting portion at the outer end of the handle, a casing member of plastic material and of channel section embracing and supported by the flanges of said handle bar and substantially enclosing the same and embracing and enclosing the said spindle attaching portion of the handle bar, said handle bar having openings therein and said casing member having integral rivetlike portions upset in said openings.
7. In a handle, the combination of a handle bar of outwardly facing channel section having spaced flanges and a web portion connecting the same, the web portion of the handle bar being extended beyond the flanges thereof to constitute a spindle attaching element, a casing member of plastic material and of channel section embracing and supported by the flanges of said handle bar and substantially enclosing the same and embracing and enclosing the said spindle attaching portion of the handle bar, said handle bar having openings therein and said casing member having integral rivet-like portions upset in said openings.
8. In a handle, the combination of a metal handle bar having spaced openings therein disposed to extend for a substantial distance longitudinally thereof, a casing member formed of plastic material embracing said handle bar, said casing member being provided with portions disposed in said openings in said handle bar and upset therein, a grip spindle arranged through said handle bar and easing member at the outer end thereof, and a grip secured to the front end of said spindle.
9. In a handle, the combination of a metal handle bar having spaced openings therein, and a casing member formed of plastic material of channel section embracing the outer exposed portion and sides of said handle bar, said casing member being provided with medial portions disposed in said openings in said handle banand upset therein.
10. In a handle, the combination of a metal handle bar of hollow channel-like open section, and a casing member for said handle bar formed of plastic material, said handle bar opening toward said casing member and having openings therein and said casing overlapping the sides of said bar and having portions upset in said openings whereby the parts are secured together, the handle bar constituting a back member for the handle.
11. In a handle, the combination of a metal handle bar of hollow channel-like open section, and a casing member for said handle bar formed of plastic material, said handle bar opening toward said casing member and having openings therein and said casing overlapping the sides of said bar and having portions upset in said openings whereby the parts are secured together.
