Description

.i. s. KEELER ET AL HANDLE FOR DOORLATCHES Filed May 6, 1924 INVENTOR WIw/aa 2 (fi e/e22 er 4 i A TTORNE Y3 I Patented Dec. 21, 1926.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC. S. KEELEB AND ALBERT L. BIRDSALL, GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN; AS- SIGNORS TO KEELER BRASS COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
HANDLE son noon LATCHES.
Application filed May 6,
This invention relates to improvements in handles for door'latches.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved handle for door latches,
6 311011 as automobile doors, which may be provided with the desired finish in silver, nickel or the like, and which is at the same time very economical to produce.
Objects pertaining to details and econo- 1 mies of construction and operation'will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated 'in the accompanying drawing forming a part ofthis application, in which:
. Fig. I is a perspective view of a door latch handle embodying the features of our invention.
Fig. II is a detail view partially in section on a line correspondingto line 22 of Fig. I.
Fi III is a cross section on a line correspon ing to line 3-3 of Fig. II.
' In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking inthe direction of the little arrowsat the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views.
Referring to the. drawing, we have not shown the latch proper as its relation to the spindle will be well understood by those skilled in the art. {1 represents the door and 2 the door plate which has an opening 3 for the spindle 4. This spindle is of rectangular cross section .to engage the latch. The tubalarspindlehousifig 5 has an enlargement or annular shoulder 6 in bearing engagement with the face plate. This sleeve projects into the bearing member 7 these parts being retained in assembled relation by the lugs 8 struck out from the spindle, the lugs enga 'ng the flanged end of the bearing mem er.
, The outer end of the spindle is reduced at 9 to. receive the handle bar 10 which is 1924. Serial no. 711,408.
colored celluloid or other material which may be made to correspond in color with the finish of the automobile body. The edges of this face plate overlap the beveled edges of the handlebar and are clamped thereon by the flanges 14of the ornamental casing 15. This casing may be of sheet metal with a suitable finish as nickel or brass, or it may be of silver in more expensive work.
The rear finishing, plate 16 is arranged upon therear sideof the handle bar and clamped thereon by folding the edges 17 of the casing thereon. The edges 18 of the rear finishing plate are inwardly offset so that when the edges 17 are folded thereon thefa'ce of the finishing plate is flush with the flanged edges of the casing.
By this arrangement of parts we provide a structurewhich is very economical in its parts and in assembling. At the same time it is attractive in appearance and may be easily finished to meet particular requirements.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination of a door plate having a spindle opening therein, a spindle, a handle bar rigidly attached to the outer end of said spindle, a housing sleeve arranged on said spindle between said handle bar and door plate and having an annular enlargement engaging said plate, an ornamental face plate for said handlebar, a casing for said handle bar having flanges on its front edges overlapping said face plate, and a rear finishing plate through which said spindle sleeve is disposed, the rear edges of said casing being folded over the edges of said rear finishin plate.
In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
ISAAC S. KEELER. ALBERT L. BIRDSALL.
