Description

Sept. 20, 1932. SCHMIDT H,878,544
LOCKING DEVICE Filed Dec. 25, 1950 Patented Sept. 20, 1932 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE LOUIS D. SCHMIDT, OF POND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T0 COMBINATION DOQR COMPANY, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN LOCKING DEVICE Application filed December 23, 1930. Serial No. 504,333.
This invention relates to improvements in looking devices of the character set forth 1n the United States Letters Patent #1,149 ,0 90, and has for the primary object, the provision of means for increasing the pressure or holding power of the device when moved from an unlatched position to a latched pbsition for more efficiently locking the closure or the like to the frame thereof and thereby assuring a weather-proof connection between said closure and frame and obviating any poss1- bility of rattles or unnecessary noises Another object of this invention is the provision of an offset in the lever to provide a finger grip disposed over the rim or attaching flange of the cup or casing that the device may be more easily actuated by the increased leverage provided thereby.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a locking device of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. 1
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description. proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing and following description, in which Figure l is a fragmentary elevation illustrating a locking-device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the locking element inv locked position.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view showing the device in an unlocked position.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the de vice in locked position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the locking element.
. Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the fastening element or screw.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a closure or the like associated with a frame 2 grooved or slotted to provide a keeper 3 in which the locking element 4 is moved to secure the closure against relative movement with respect to the frame 2. The closure 1 is provided with a seat or positely disposed shoulders 14 are formed on the shank 12 and head. 13 and are received in a slot 15 of the latch element 4.
The latch element 4 comprises an elongated head 16 having rounded or arcuate shaped ends 17 and substantially straight sides 18 that the latch element may rotatefreely within the cup or casing 5 in either direction. A handle 19 is formed on one of the straight sides 18 of the head 16and is offset to extend outwardly of the cup or casing 5 over the flange 9 to permit a person to easily obtain a firm grip on the lever for moving the head 16 into and out of engagement with the keeper and the offset provides a very desirable leverage for facilitating the actuation of the device.
After the device has been applied to the closure 1 as shown in the drawing, and with the fastener 11 threaded into the closure, the movement of the latching element 4 into a position for disposing a portion of the head 16 in the keeper 3,,the screw or fastener 11 will be given a quarter of a turn and owing to its threaded action with the closure 1 an increased binding action of the head 16 in the keeper 3 will be provided, and more efiiciently lock the closure to its frame by urging the closure toward the frame and thereby establishing a weather-proof connection,
and also will obviate rattles or unnecessary noises by the binding of the closure to the frame. The movement of the lever 19 in a reverse direction disengages the head 16 from the keeper 3 and also provides a quarter of arr-.4 My
gaging the walls of the slot to rotate the fas-.
a turn to the fastener 11 in a reverse direction relieving the binding action.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in Y construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A latching device comprising a substantially semicircular cup shaped plate secured to a movable member and having an opening, an elongated head located within the clip shaped plate and rotatable to disposed one end thereof into and out of a keeper of a nonmovable member, said head having a slot intermediate the ends thereof, a headed screwthreaded fastener extending through the slot and opening and threaded to the non-movable member, lugs on said fastener and entener by the rotation of the head and cause binding of the head against a wall of the keeper when said head 15 rotated in a direction for positioning a portion thereof in the keeper, and a handle formed in one edge of the head and ofiset and extending outwardly of the cup shaped plate for permitting manual rotation of the head in either di-- rection.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LOUIS D. SCHMIDT.
