Description
y 1936. 1.. J. SCHMIDT' KEEPER PROTECTIVE PLATE Filed June 4, 1935 INVENTOR I BY W 7% A TORNEY WITNESS Patented May 19, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KEEPER PROTECTIVE PLATE Louis J. Schmidt,
Application June 4,
2 Claims.
The invention relates to a locking device and more especially to refinements over the subject matter of United States Letters Patent No. 1,878,544 issued September 20, 1932.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the keeper slot for a latch or look will be protected to prevent the chewing away or mutilation of the wall of the slot when operating the lock or latch.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the protecting member can be fastened in place within the keeper slot without the use of nails or separate fasteners, the protecting plate being novel in construction and is applied with dispatch and when in place will be firm and secure.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, easy of application and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a fragmentary elevation of a locking device forming the subject matter of United States Letters Patent No. 1,878,544 dated September 20, 1932, with the protection plate constructed in accordance with the invention in association.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the protection plate.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, I indicates a closure or the like associated with a frame 2 grooved or slotted to provide a keeper 3 in which the locking element 4 is moved to secure the closure against relative movement with respect to the frame 2. The closure I is provided with a seat or recess 5 adapted to align with the keeper 3 and has positioned therein a cup or casing 6 provided with a bottom wall 1 and integral side wall 8 provided with an attaching flange 9 apertured to receive suitable fasteners for firmly attaching the cup or casing to the closure I. The latch element 4 comprises an elongated head In having rounded or arcuate shaped ends II and substantially straight sides l2 that the latch element may rotate freely within the cup or casing in either direction. A handle I3 is formed on one of the straight sides l2 of the head and is offset to extend outwardly of the cup or casing 5 Fond du Lac, Wis.
1935, Serial No. 24,955
over the flange 9 to permit a person to easily obtain a firm grip on the handle for moving the head into and out of engagement with the keeper 3 and the offset provides a very suitable leverage for facilitating the actuation of the device. This locking device is disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,878,544 issued September 20, 1932.
Cooperating with the latch element 4 is a protection plate which constitutes refinements over the subject matter of the Letters Patent aforesaid and comprises an L-shaped metal piece l4, the flange portion 15 of which has the substantially arched edge I 6 corresponding to the bottom I! of the keeper 3 while the flange portion l8 has the rounded ends l9 and upon these portions are formed pointed arrow-shaped prongs 20 and 2|, respectively, which function to secure the protection plate in place and with the part to which it is attached.
The prongs 2| are bent at right angles to the plane of the portion I8 while the prongs 20 are in 'the same plane with the portion I5.
In the use of the protection plate the same is placed with respect to the keeper 3 so that the portion [5 will lie against the striking wall of the keeper with the prongs penetrating the frame 2 while the portion I8 is at the meeting edge of said frame with relation to the closure I so that when the latch element 4 is engaged in the keeper 3 it will play against the protection plate to avoid mutilation of the frame 2 and the chewing away of the wall or walls of the keeper 3 when the closure l is latched. The portion 18 lies against the edge of the frame 2 nextto the closure I.
What is claimed is:
1. A protector plate for the walls of a mortice in a wooden abutment that provides a keeper opening for a latching device on a member which is swingable against the face of the abutment, said 40 protector plate comprising a substantially ,L- shaped member, and securing prongs integrally formed with said member and having pointed free ends, the prongs being in parallel relation to each other and disposed in the same direction with respect to one another.
2. A protective plate for a mortice in a wooden structure, in which said mortice provides a keeper for a latching device, said protective plate comprising a substantially L-shaped member, and securing prongs integrally formed with said member and having pointed free ends, the prongs being in parallel relation to each other and disposed in the same direction with respect to one another, the member being insertable in the mortice to have one portion cover one wall of said mortice and the other portion overlying the edge next to said wall of the mortice.
