Abstract

1,230,588. Padlocks; hasp fastenings. C. E. BEAVER. 1 Aug., 1968 [30 Aug., 1967], No. 36793/68. Heading E2A. A padlock and guard assembly comprises a padlock having a body 26 and a shackle 28, said shackle having a portion for engaging a staple and an end portion 30 adapted to be removably inserted in a recess in said body, said padlock having releasable locking means in said body adapted to engage and hold said shackle at times when said end portion of said shackle is in said recess, a guard 60 having a first end 62 adjacent said body, said guard having a notch in one side thereof through which the staple can be received when engaged with said portion of said shackle, said guard being attached to said shackle and having a second end 64 opposite said first end covering the part of said shackle farthest from said body, said guard surrounding those parts of said shackle which remain outside of said body when said end portion of said shackle is in the recess other than on that side of said shackle which faces said notch, said notch opening at the first end of said guard to permit passage therethrough of a part of said staple when engaging said staple with said shackle, said body when unlocked, being slidable away from said one end portion of said shackle until said body is withdrawn from said guard and thereafter said body being further movable for permitting said staple to be removed from engagement with said shackle. In the construction shown the guard has a portion 100 projecting outwardly from one side 76 adjacent the second end of said guard and the body has a projection 130 projecting therefrom adjacent that end which is opposite said guard and on the side thereof which is adjacent said fourth side of said guard; these projections prevent a saw from engaging the stape 34. In a modificaction however the projections are omitted and instead the hasp which is used with the staple is provided with a guard which extends round its edge sufficiently to prevent a saw being engaged with the staple.
