Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Fast Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to locks, and more particularly to means for securing a mortise lock within a hollow metal door stile.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to furnish a lock construction in which a pair of escutcheons coperate with suitable fastening members at the top and bottom of the inortise lock case in such a manner as to secure the lock firmly in the hollow metal stile without the necessity of screwing or otherwise directly connecting the face plate or front of the lock to the stilef Y The invention also has in view the general improvement in construction and application of devices of the class to which the invention relates.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. s
ln the accompanying drawing, A
Figure 1 is afragmentary outside view of a metal door equipped with my improvements;
Fig. 2 is an edge view Fig. 3 is a section on Fig.
Fig. lock and l o Figs. 6 and 7 are fragmentary details of the outside escutcheon.
ln the drawing, the hollow metal door of the door; line 2)#3 of Fig. 1;
stile'lO isshown as constituted by a metal tube of 'generally rectangular cross-section as usual.
lock 13 housed within the stile. The slot 11 extends completely through the metal tube and corresponds in contour with the face plate in said slot with its outer face substantially flush with the outer fa-ce of the metal tube. ln the particular form shown, the mortise lock 13 is provided with a latch bolt 14 adaptedto beretracted by inside and out 18 is provided At the edge of the door7 the stile is provided with an elongated slot 11 to receive the face plate or front 12 of a mortlse may be clampedrin the assembled the wall of 12, which ts snugly side lever handles or other manual retracting devices 15, 16 respectively, and also by a key fitting a cylinder lock 17. The cylinder lock 17 and the outer lever handle 16 pass through an outside escutcheon 18, and the inside lever handle 15 passes through an inside escutcheon 19.
At the upper part of the case of the mortise `lock are a pair of upwardlyprojecting lugs 20, which are preferably cast on the main body portion of the lock case and in dependent of the usual cap plate. Preferably these lugs 2O are of the same thickness as the lock case, one face of 'each lug being flush with the cap plate, and the opposite face of said lug being flush with the back of the lock. A bore or perforation 21 eX- tends through each lug. Similar lugs 20 are also provided at the lower part of the case, as shown in Fig. 5. The outside escutcheon with inwardly projecting sleeve members or sockets 22 near the respective corners of said escutclieon, said sleeve members or sockets 22 being provided with interior screw threads 23 (Fig. 7 and the inside escutclieon 19 is provided near the corners thereof with sleeve-like members or sockets 24: adapted to alinewith the sockets 22 and with the lugs 20 of the mortise lock case. The sockets or sleeves 24E on the inside escutcheon are provided with smooth bores or perforations, which extend entirely through said escutcheon and the perforations of both escutcheons i are adapted to engage suitable holes or 4 is a section on line /1-11 of Fig. '1; 5 is a side elevation of the mortise "l perforations in the corresponding wall of the stile, as shown in Fig. 4L. A fastening screw 25 passes through each sleeve 24, and through each perforated lug 20 into the alined threaded sleeve 22 of the outside escutcheon, and said screw is provided with threads at its inner end to engage those of the socket or sleeve 22, whereby the parts position.
It will be understood, therefore, that the escutclieons are supported flatwise agaii'ist the inner and outer walls of the hollow door stile with their sleeves projecting into the' hollow interior of the stile to a certain eX- tent. When the parts are inthe assembled position, these sleeves extend into substantial contact with the adjacent faces of the lugs 20, and by making all of the sleeves ofthe saine length, the mortise lock may be firmly' and: securely clamped in place ,side walls "of sockets 22, 24. When the centrally of the door stile with the face plate in its proper position in the slot 11. By fastening the mortise lock "to the four corners ofthe escuteheons in the manner described, the lock is very securely held against displacement, and it will be apparent that the lock can be very readily and conveniently Ymounted. In mounting the lock, the same is inserted into the door stile through the slot ll, so that the face plate takes its vproperjposition in the stile ll. At this time, theopenings 2l of the several lugsA 20 will register with the openings which have been drilled in the inner and outerl walls of the stile for the sleeves or lock 13 is inserted into the stile, it is preferably arrested in the proper .position by stop members or lugs 26 rprojeetiFng rearward y from the body portion of the-case into contact with the rear wall 27 of the hollow stile member,
.gas-shown vmoreparticularly in Figs. 3 and 4.
When'lthe lock has been properly positioned, the-escuteheons can be very readily applied in anv obvious manner, and the cylinder lock is lthen mounted in the usual way.
Iido not lclaim broadly hereinv the combination o-f a inetal hollow stile having a slot at the -edge of the door, a inortise lock in fsaid stile having ya face plate located in said-slot, .'tiseflock.butseparate from the stile, escutehsaid'rface plate carried by the moreon members applied to the inside and outthe stile, and a transverse fastening member interconnecting said es cutcheon -members `and passing through a part of saidmortise lock for securing it in place, as claimed in my application, Serial N o. 95,229, filed on even date herewith.
